Takehiro Hira to Receive Hollywood Reporter’s Trailblazer Award at Tokyo International Film Festival
The celebrated Japanese actor Takehiro Hira, known for his roles in the critically acclaimed series Shogun and the Brendan Fraser-led drama Rental Family, will be honored with The Hollywood Reporter’s Trailblazer Award at the 38th Tokyo International Film Festival. The award recognizes artists who champion complex storytelling and expand representation in global entertainment.
The prestigious honor, presented in partnership with the Motion Picture Association (MPA), will be bestowed upon Hira during an “American Film Night” celebration at the Roppongi Hills Club on October 28. The event is expected to draw prominent figures from both the American and Japanese film industries. Hira becomes only the second Japanese talent to receive the distinction, following veteran actor Tadanobu Asano, who was recognized at last year’s festival.
The Hollywood Reporter’s Trailblazer Award is reserved for artists whose work pushes boundaries and illuminates nuanced narratives. Past international recipients include Jean Smart, David Oyelowo, Eva Longoria, Matt Bomer, and America Ferrera, demonstrating the award’s commitment to recognizing global contributions to the art of filmmaking.
Hira’s performance as the ambitious warlord Ishido Kazunari in Shogun garnered widespread international acclaim in 2023, earning him an Emmy nomination for outstanding supporting actor in a drama series. He starred alongside Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai in the FX historical epic.
Currently, the Tokyo-born actor is starring opposite Fraser in Rental Family, a Searchlight Pictures drama directed by Hikari. The film, which premiered to positive reviews in Toronto, will have a gala screening at this year’s Tokyo festival. Hira has also recently completed work on Lionsgate’s Karoshi, featuring Cynthia Erivo, Teo Yoo, and Isabelle May, and appeared in Guy Maddin’s Rumours, alongside Cate Blanchett and Alicia Vikander, which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival.
Over the past two decades, Hira has cultivated a truly international career, seamlessly navigating projects across Hollywood, Europe, and Asia. His breakthrough role came with the 2020 Netflix/BBC series Giri/Haji, where he portrayed detective Kenzo Mori, earning a BAFTA TV Award nomination for best lead actor. He is set to reprise his role as Hiroshi Randa in the second season of Apple TV+’s action series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
Hira’s extensive filmography includes notable Japanese productions such as Masato Harada’s Criminal on the Prosecutor’s Side, Takashi Miike’s Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai, and Yasuo Mikami’s Bushido. He has also appeared in major Western films including Neill Blomkamp’s Gran Turismo, Robert Schwentke’s Snake Eyes, and Marvel’s upcoming Captain America: Brave New World.
The Tokyo International Film Festival, Japan’s largest annual celebration of cinema, will commence next week in the Ginza district. The MPA and The Hollywood Reporter’s award party is anticipated to be a key event, fostering cross-industry collaboration.
In addition to the Trailblazer Award, the MPA will host its annual policy program on October 29, focused on bolstering Japan’s production ecosystem. The session will feature producers Schuyler Weis (Elvis), Eriko Miyagawa (Shogun), Obb Siricharoenji (Alien: Earth), and Junko Kusunoki (Tokyo Vice), moderated by The Hollywood Reporter’s Asia bureau chief, Patrick Brzeski. Furthermore, Schuyler Weiss will conduct a masterclass at TIFFCOM on October 31.
