Tangier vibrates to the rhythm of the captivating melodies of Jazz

This major multi-artist concert dedicated to Jazz, a world music, was broadcast live for more than an hour, highlighting Tangier, an emblematic city, which embodies the harmonious meeting of the different cultures of the world.

This “All-Star Global Concert” show offered the audience extraordinary performances, bringing together renowned artists, such as the legendary jazz singer Dee Dee Bridgewater, the talented saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin, the rising star jazz singer Jazzmeia Horn, the drummer and electronic composer Jongkuk Kim, the influential Marcus Miller and harmonica virtuoso Antonio Serrano.

This concert also saw icons of the jazz scene perform, including the master of Gnaoua, Abdellah El Gourd, the singer Claudia Acuña, the trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, the singer Richard Bona, the famous Mozambican jazz artist, Moreira Chonguiça, the award-winning singer Shemekia Copeland, the Kurt Elling Orchestra, pianist Antonio Faraò, singer Melody Gardot, multi-instrumentalist Magnus Lindgren, guitarist Romero Lubambo, bassist Yasushi Nakamura and pianist Tarek Yamani.

This is how emblematic figures of jazz and blues electrified the city of Tangier, under the direction of the legendary pianist Herbie Hancock and the American composer and arranger John Beasley.

In an atmosphere sublimated by the swing of jazz, the spectators let themselves be carried away by the flights of the saxophone, carried by the virtuosity of the voices which weaved captivating melodies, punctuated by a vibrant cadence.

This world-class concert is added to the prestigious list of major international events organized in Morocco, strengthening its reputation as a land of tolerance, peaceful coexistence and living together.

This unique evening, which brought together the megaliths of the world jazz scene, was enhanced by the presence of the Advisor to His Majesty the King and founding President of the Essaouira-Mogador Association, Mr. André Azoulay, the Minister of Youth , culture and communication, Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, the Minister of National Education, preschool and sports, Chakib Benmoussa, the Wali of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, Younes Tazi, the president of the Regional Council , Omar Moro, the president of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz, Tom Carter, and a host of officials and personalities from the worlds of Moroccan and foreign culture and art.

Created by the General Conference of UNESCO in 2011 and recognized by the United Nations General Assembly, International Jazz Day brings together countries and communities from around the world every year on April 30.

This Day highlights the power of jazz and its role in promoting peace, dialogue between cultures, diversity and respect for human dignity.

Organized by UNESCO and the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz, with the support of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Communication, in partnership with the municipality of Tangier, the “Jazz day” festivities made it possible to highlight highlight the jazz heritage of Tangier, as well as the cultural and artistic links uniting Morocco, Europe and Africa.
