Despite speculation he might challenge for the presidency himself, the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas, reaffirmed his allegiance to former President Jair Bolsonaro on Monday, following Bolsonaro’s decision to support his son, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, as a pre-candidate for the nation’s highest office.
Freitas, a member of the Republicans party, publicly addressed the matter for the first time, stating he had spoken with Flávio Bolsonaro and pledged his support for the Senator’s campaign. “Flávio himself said this, he was with me last Friday, we talked about it,” Freitas revealed during a press conference held in Diadema, Greater São Paulo. “President Bolsonaro, who is a person I respect a lot and I always said that I would be loyal to Bolsonaro, that I am grateful to Bolsonaro and I have this loyalty, it is non-negotiable.”
Shifting Political Landscape in Brazil
The move solidifies Bolsonaro’s continued influence within the Brazilian right-wing, even as he faces legal challenges that may preclude his own candidacy. Freitas had been widely considered a potential successor to Bolsonaro, making his public endorsement of Flávio Bolsonaro a significant development. The governor emphasized his gratitude towards the former president, characterizing his loyalty as unwavering.
Support for Flávio Bolsonaro’s Campaign
Freitas indicated his administration would actively support Flávio Bolsonaro’s presidential aspirations. “Flávio will count on us,” he stated, adding that the Senator now bears a “great responsibility” to address the challenges facing Brazil. He noted that Flávio Bolsonaro joins other prominent opposition figures, including Romeu Zema and Ronaldo Caiado, who have signaled their interest in a presidential run.
Key Issues Facing Brazil’s Next Leader
According to Freitas, the next president will need to prioritize addressing critical issues such as social inequality, improving the connection between leadership and the citizenry, and resolving a looming fiscal crisis. “There are many issues that will require a project, effort, that will require leadership and Flávio is now stepping forward to head this project as well and for this he will count on our support and what we need is to remove what is there, which did not work,” Freitas explained.
The governor’s comments suggest a broader call for change and a rejection of the current political status quo. As the Brazilian political landscape continues to evolve, Freitas’s unwavering support for the Bolsonaro family underscores the enduring power of their political alliance.
