On the morning of May 4, 2023, residents of the capital began to complain about the operation of navigation. The location of users is determined incorrectly, map services do not cope with building routes.

The Vedomosti correspondent also drew attention to the problems with the Yandex-maps and Yandex-taxi services. Difficulties arose not only with calling a taxi, but also with carsharing and kicksharing (renting electric scooters).

Due to problems with GPS and GLONASS, the location of vehicles is also determined incorrectly. Scooters, along with taxis and carsharing, “float” in the water and are not displayed where they actually are. Because of this, it is not possible to start or end a car or electric scooter rental. The problem persisted until the evening.

Vedomosti interviewed the leading players in the rental of vehicles and taxis. A representative of the press service of the kicksharing service Whoosh told Vedomosti that in several locations there is an error in displaying the position on the map.

“There were cases where it was difficult for users to start or end a rental. But all these are minor incidents, few on the scale of the service in the city,” a Whoosh representative told Vedomosti. The company has strengthened the work of the support service, he added.

Yandex confirmed to RBC problems with GPS in Moscow. GPS outages affect “every service in general, from navigation apps to fitness bands,” but have nothing to do with the service infrastructure.

The correspondent of the radio station “Moscow speaking” personally encountered a problem in determining the location. “The determination of the geolocation in Yandex Navigator of the taxi driver was knocked down: for example, the car was on Okhotny Ryad, and the navigator showed that we were driving along Tverskaya near the Boulevard Ring. The driver said that problems are observed within the entire TTK,” he said.

Yurent confirmed to Vedomosti that it also observes failures with GPS, the reasons for the company are unknown. “We recommend users to study the route of the trip in advance so as not to encounter overlaps and communication problems in the center,” summed up Yurent.

Vedomosti also sent requests to Yandex, as well as to the Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development in Moscow. A spokesperson for Delimobil declined to comment.

Telecom Daily CEO Denis Kuskov believes that there is no need to worry and use offline maps, although the situation could cause problems for those who use navigation in logistics and taxis. He believes that the situation was created due to increased security measures.
