Taylor Swift’s ‘the fate Of ophelia’ Secures Record-Breaking Run at UK Number One
Taylor swift continues to dominate the UK music charts, with her latest single, “The Fate Of Ophelia,” holding the number One spot for a seventh consecutive week. The track, released on October 3 as the lead single from her latest album, The Life Of A Showgirl, first reached Number One on October 16, displacing Olivia Dean’s “Man I Need.”
“The Fate Of Ophelia” registered the largest first-week sales of 2025,boasting an extraordinary 132,000 units sold. Its journey to the top wasn’t without competition; the song initially spent three weeks at Number one before being briefly overtaken by “Golden” from Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters, performed by the fictional group Huntr/x.Swift quickly reclaimed the position after two weeks, demonstrating her enduring popularity.
This success surpasses the six-week reign of her previous longest-running Number One, “Anti-Hero” from the 2022 album Midnights. At that time, Swift also achieved a milestone as the first female artist since Miley Cyrus in 2013 to simultaneously top both the UK albums and singles charts. “Anti-Hero” also maintained a strong presence, spending 15 non-consecutive weeks within the top 10.
To date, Swift has secured five Number One singles in the UK. Her chart-topping journey began with “Look What You Made Me Do” in 2017, followed by “Anti-Hero” in 2022, “Is It over Now? (Taylor’s Version)” in 2023, “Fortnight” in 2024, and now “The Fate Of Ophelia.”
The Life Of A Showgirl has further cemented Swift’s position as a chart powerhouse, achieving her 14th Number One album in the UK and spending four non-consecutive weeks at the summit. She currently holds the record for the most number One albums by an international artist, trailing onyl The Beatles and Robbie Williams, both with 15. She shares second place with The Rolling Stones.
A review from NME awarded The life Of A Showgirl three stars, noting that “To seek escapism is not a sin, but the best pop music makes the personal feel like life or death. ‘Speak Now’, ‘Reputation’, ‘Folklore’: her greatest works could be genuinely transformative.” The review continued, stating that the album marks a shift for Swift, finding her “not catalysed into artistic growth by love, but merely comfortably secured by it.”
The Official Charts has identified Swift as a strong contender for the coveted Christmas Number One, with “The Fate Of Ophelia,” “Opalite,” and “Olivia Taylor” all currently charting. Competition is expected from Olivia Dean’s “The Christmas song,” labrinth’s “Where Love Lives” – featured in this year’s John Lewis Christmas advertisement – McFly’s Tom Fletcher with “One Of Us” from Paddington: The Musical, and Raye with “Where Is My Husband!”, currently at Number Two after 11 weeks on the chart.
Festive staples from Wham! and Mariah carey are also in the running, with “Last Christmas” and “All I Want For Christmas Is You” currently holding the Number Three and Number Four positions, respectively. “Last Christmas” has claimed the Christmas Number One spot for the past two years.
Adding to her already extensive portfolio, Swift recently released the official trailer for her concert film, The eras Tour: The Final Show. The film captures the final performance of her hugely successful ‘Eras Tour’ at BC Place stadium in Vancouver, British Columbia, canada, last December, and will feature “the entire ‘tortured Poets department’ set.”
