Burning Crusade Anniversary Servers: Players Anticipate Quality-of-Life Changes and Potential Era Servers

Blizzard Entertainment’s upcoming Burning Crusade Anniversary servers are generating significant excitement within the World of Warcraft community, fueled by speculation about potential changes beyond those implemented in the 2019 Classic release. While a segment of players champion a “#nochanges” philosophy, recent Classic iterations have demonstrated Blizzard’s willingness to introduce quality-of-life improvements and innovative features.

A History of Iteration in WoW Classic

Blizzard has already begun to deviate from a strict recreation of past expansions with its Classic progression servers. The introduction of Dual Specialization and instant mail between characters on the same account in the 20th Anniversary servers signaled a shift in approach. Further adjustments, such as easing the acquisition of the notoriously rare Black Lotus herb from Season of Mastery, indicate a willingness to address player pain points.

This willingness to iterate isn’t new. In Wrath of the Lich King Classic, modified Heroic dungeons with rotating affixes were introduced, offering a new challenge and a pathway for players to catch up. These dungeons, and their associated rewards, proved immensely popular and continued to evolve through Cataclysm and Mists of Pandaria Classic. The latter now features “Celestial” Dungeons, effectively replacing the Looking for Raid feature. “Celestial Dungeons have become a cornerstone of the current endgame,” one analyst noted, “providing a consistent source of gear and progression.”

Furthermore, Wrath of the Lich King introduced currencies earned from dungeons that allowed players to purchase gear from previous raids, a system that continues to thrive in Mists of Pandaria Classic with the August Stone Fragment Vendor.

What Changes Could Arrive with The Burning Crusade Anniversary?

With the success of these adjustments in other Classic iterations, players are now voicing their desires for The Burning Crusade Anniversary. A common request is a Class Trainer in Orgrimmar offering Dual Specialization, mirroring the change already implemented in the 20th Anniversary servers.

A Longer Pre-Patch and Level Boosts

One of the most significant criticisms of The Burning Crusade Classic in 2021 was the brevity of the pre-patch. Players were granted only two weeks to level their new Blood Elf or Draenei characters and experience the new abilities and talents while still capped at level 60. Many in the community are hoping for a more extended pre-patch this time around. Some have even suggested a dedicated server focused on The Burning Crusade classes and abilities within the Vanilla setting.

Another potential adjustment is the inclusion of level boosts for Draenei and Blood Elves during the pre-patch. While boosts were available in 2021 bundles, they excluded the new races. However, Mists of Pandaria Classic surprised players by allowing boosts on the expansion’s new race, the Pandaren, even for the new Monk class.

Streamlining Attunements

The Burning Crusade is well-known for its complex attunement processes for both dungeons and raids. If the Anniversary servers aim for a more accelerated progression, quality-of-life adjustments to these attunements would be welcomed. A frequently proposed solution is to make attunements account-bound, eliminating the need to repeat the process on multiple characters.

However, some players believe attunements are a core part of the Burning Crusade experience. A more moderate adjustment could be lowering the Reputation requirement for Heroic Dungeon attunements from Revered to Honored, mirroring a change implemented in Patch 2.3 with the release of the Zul’Aman raid. Content creator WillE has suggested implementing a system similar to Wrath of the Lich King, where lore quest chains reward Badge currencies, potentially incentivizing players to complete attunement chains.

Raid-Wide Shaman Buffs

The Shaman class is considered exceptionally powerful in The Burning Crusade, often requiring at least five in a 25-player raid due to their crucial buffs, including Bloodlust/Heroism and Windfury Totem. Currently, these buffs are party-wide only. A significant adjustment would be to make these buffs raid-wide and introduce the Sated debuff, which prevents stacking of haste effects, a feature not present until Wrath of the Lich King.

While some worry this could diminish the demand for Shamans, it’s argued that groups would still value at least three for totems like Grace of Air Totem and Windfury Totem.

Quality-of-Life Improvements and Contentious Issues

Beyond these major changes, players are also requesting smaller quality-of-life improvements. The high cost of flying mounts – 300 gold for normal speed and 5,200 gold for fast flying – is a common complaint. A reduction in price or an account-bound tome offering flying would be a welcome change.

Adjustments to gathering professions, mirroring the increased Black Lotus spawns and multi-node gathering in other Classic versions, could also help reduce consumable costs. Specifically, adjustments to Terocone, a key ingredient in many consumables, are being requested.

Perhaps the most controversial topic is the potential return of Gold Dragon Kill Point (GDKP) runs. Blizzard has banned GDKPs on North American and European Anniversary servers, citing concerns about Real Money Trading (RMT) and the erosion of social structures. “Our policy aligns with our internal findings and positive player feedback from Season of Discovery,” a senior official stated. However, the policy does not apply to regions outside of North America and Europe, and Blizzard has reserved the right to revisit the decision.

The Future of Anniversary Servers and the Possibility of Era Servers

The Burning Crusade Anniversary servers present another opportunity for players to potentially secure TBC Era servers – servers that would not progress into Wrath of the Lich King. While Blizzard has not officially confirmed the future of these servers, speculation is rife that they will eventually lead to Wrath of the Lich King.

The question remains: what changes would players like to see in The Burning Crusade Anniversary? The community’s voice is clear – they desire a balance between preserving the spirit of the original expansion and implementing quality-of-life improvements that enhance the overall experience.
