The TCL QM9K series attempts to break this stalemate with a flagship-tier Google TV that doesn’t just wait for a remote click to wake up; it watches for you.
The centerpiece of this experience is a radar-like presence-sensing feature that allows the TCL QM9K Google TV turns on when I walk in the room, transforming the television into an ambient piece of home furniture. After several months of daily use, the technology proves to be a fascinating, if occasionally impractical, glimpse into the future of the living room. While the hardware is impressive, the utility of “presence sensing” currently sits in a gray area between a genuine convenience and a high-tech novelty.
At its core, the QM9K is a powerhouse of a display. Utilizing a QD-MiniLED setup, the panel reaches a staggering peak brightness of up to 6,500 nits in HDR, providing a vividness that rivals the best in the industry. The deep blacks and wide viewing angles ensure that the image remains consistent even for those sitting far off-center in a large living room. For those looking to maximize the hardware, switching from the default energy saver to “vivid mode” unlocks the full potential of the color gamut and luminance.
How Presence Sensing Actually Works
The QM9K incorporates a radar-like sensor on the front of the chassis. Unlike a camera, which might raise significant privacy concerns, this sensor detects human presence through movement and proximity. The goal is to create a “zero-touch” interaction model where the TV adapts to your location in the room.

The interaction occurs in stages. When you first enter the room, the TV activates to display the standard Google TV screensaver, typically featuring a rotating gallery of your personal photos. As you move closer—for instance, approaching the couch—the screen transitions to a widget page. This page provides a glanceable overview of the time, current weather, and news headlines.


One of the more practical aspects of this system is the ability to customize the trigger distance. It is not a binary “on or off” switch. The widget page is static; users cannot customize which widgets appear or control the specific news topics displayed. This lack of agency means that the TV often displays information the user may not actually want to see.

Notably, this series was among the first to integrate Gemini, Google’s latest AI model, replacing the older Google Assistant. While Gemini provides a more sophisticated interaction layer, it is becoming a standard across the Google TV ecosystem, including the Google TV Streamer, meaning it is less of a unique selling point for the QM9K specifically.
TCL has also implemented a proprietary Settings overlay that is notably more organized and responsive than the standard Google TV menus. This allows for quick adjustments to picture and sound settings without digging through multiple layers of software. Crucially, the presence-sensing features remain functional even when using external HDMI devices, such as a gaming console or a separate streaming box, ensuring that the “wake-on-approach” logic isn’t tied exclusively to the built-in apps.

Pricing and Availability
The TCL QM9K series is positioned as a flagship offering, with screen sizes ranging from 65 to 98 inches. While the starting MSRP is listed at $1,999, the 65-inch model is frequently discounted, often appearing for around $1,599 at major retailers like Best Buy.
the QM9K is an exceptional television based on its visual performance and build quality. The presence-sensing technology is a bold experiment that succeeds in automating power cycles but fails to provide a fully integrated “ambient” experience. Until the software allows for deeper customization of the widget page and a more seamless transition to full operation, it remains a compelling novelty rather than a primary reason to purchase the set.
TCL has not yet announced additional models featuring this specific radar hardware. Whether presence sensing becomes a standard across the industry or remains a niche flagship experiment will likely depend on how users adapt to this modern form of human-computer interaction in the home.
