Team USA women’s hockey continues its relentless pursuit of Olympic gold, securing a decisive 6–0 victory over Italy on Friday at Milano Rho Ice Hockey Arena and extending an unprecedented shutout streak. The Americans, having already outscored opponents 20–1 in the preliminary round – including a notable win against Canada – are proving to be a formidable force in the tournament.
The U.S. team’s performance has been marked by both offensive firepower and impenetrable defense. They haven’t conceded a goal in 271 minutes and 23 seconds, establishing a new Olympic record since Barbora Jurickova of Czechia scored against them in the opening game on February 5th.
Unstoppable Goaltending: Gwyneth Philips’ Stellar Performance
Gwyneth Philips, the Team USA goaltender, was instrumental in Friday’s shutout, recording six saves against Italy. While the low shot total – Italy managed just six attempts on net – might suggest a quiet night, Philips’ consistency is a key component of the team’s success. While Team USA’s offense flourished, captain Hilary Knight was notably absent from the scoresheet. Despite this, her presence remains a significant storyline. Knight is currently tied for the U.S. all-time lead in Olympic goals (14, tied with Natalie Darwitz and Katie King) and points (32, tied with Jenny Potter) across five Olympic appearances.

Team USA has advanced to the semifinals, where they await their opponent. The playoff bracket will be reseeded following the quarterfinal round. Unless Germany upsets Canada on Saturday, the Americans are projected to face Sweden in the semifinals on Monday.
