A 14-year-old girl, rescued from a Wisconsin trailer home, was found in a state of severe malnutrition that authorities are calling the worst case of child neglect they have ever witnessed. The teenager, whose identity is being withheld, was initially estimated to be between six and eight years old due to her emaciated condition.
Responding to an emergency call on August 21, police discovered the girl living with her father, Walter Goodman, 47, stepmother Melissa Goodman, 50, and othre family members – Savanna LeFever, 29, and LeFever’s partner, Kayla Stemler, 27.All four have been arrested and face multiple felony counts of chronic child neglect, stemming from what investigators describe as five years of agonizing abuse.
The girl was severely restricted in her ability to speak, eat, drink, or use the bathroom. A witness reported that goodman monitored his daughter through a webcam, stating, “Well, I keep her locked up in her bedroom with a camera on her, and that’s were she stays.”
Conflicting Accounts and Disturbing Evidence
goodman initially claimed his daughter’s condition was due to autism, alleging she refused to eat or sleep. However, hospital staff reported a stark contrast, noting that the girl’s “eyes lit up as she started listing off all the options of food she could have” once offered a normal diet.
Digital evidence paints a chilling picture of Goodman’s alleged mindset. Disturbing text messages reveal threats made against his daughter, including statements like, “If she misbehaves, I’m not going to feed her today,” and “If I could leave her somewhere in the woods, I’d leave her.” one message explicitly stated, “I wish I could kill you [the victim].”
Further texts allegedly exchanged between Melissa Goodman, Savanna LeFever, and Kayla Stemler detail discussions about physically abusing the girl. According to prosecutors, Stemler texted Melissa Goodman about administering a belt to the victim after she took more than one bite of food, while Melissa Goodman allegedly expressed her frustration, stating, “It’s hard tbh and some days I don’t want to anymore and wish she’d just go away.”
“She Doesn’t Like When I Eat That Much”
The victim reportedly told medical staff that her father disapproved of her eating, stating, “he doesn’t like when I eat that much,” when offered three meals a day at the hospital. She had not attended school since the start of the pandemic and had been denied the possibility to play outside for years.
A Remarkable Recovery and Ongoing Legal Proceedings
Despite initial fears for her life, the girl is now stable and recovering with other family members. Outagamie County Assistant District Attorney Julie DuQuaine confirmed she has been released from the hospital and is “gaining weight and doing better.” Describing her initial condition, DuQuaine stated, “I was able to observe photographs of her, and she looked like a skeleton. She was just literally skin and bones at 35 pounds.”
A GoFundMe page established to support her recovery highlights her remarkable progress, noting she has “grown three inches and doubled her body weight” in recent months. The fundraiser emphasizes her “resilience and strength,” and her “natural positivity and optimism” despite the trauma she endured. It also details her re-learning of basic self-care skills, such as bathing and brushing her teeth, which were previously denied to her.
Legal proceedings are underway.Walter Goodman’s preliminary hearing was rescheduled to January 5, 2026, at 10:30 am after his state-appointed attorney, Robert Welygan, requested more time to prepare. Preliminary hearings for Stemler, LeFever, and Melissa Goodman were scheduled for november 20 and 22, respectively. All four individuals face potential prison sentences exceeding 80 years.
The case serves as a harrowing reminder of the devastating consequences of child neglect and the importance of vigilance in protecting vulnerable individuals.
