At least ten people were killed in the eastern Indian state of Bihar by lightning during severe monsoon storms that caused sweeping floods in Bombay, the country’s financial capital, authorities said.

As a precautionary measure, the Municipal Council of Bombay, the city located on the west coast of India, ordered the closure of schools, noting that the Indian Meteorological Department had warned of the risk of heavy or very heavy rain.

Many of the city’s streets were flooded after heavy rain for several hours, halting bus and train traffic on several lines.

In Bihar, ten people were killed by lightning on Sunday.

The Prime Minister of this state, Nitish Kumar, in a statement, asked residents to “remain in their homes as long as the bad weather continues.”
