Tennessee Dominates Florida, Secures First “Swamp” Victory Since 2003

The No. 20 Tennessee Volunteers delivered a commanding 31-11 victory over the Florida Gators on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, marking their first win in Gainesville since 2003 and snapping a decade-long losing streak. The decisive win, witnessed by a sold-out crowd of 90,465, also secured Tennessee’s fifth consecutive season with at least a .500 record in SEC play under Head Coach Josh Heupel.

Tennessee’s all-time record now stands at 894-420-53, continuing its historic dominance in college football. This victory also represents the Volunteers’ third road win in SEC competition this season – a feat not accomplished since 2006. “This team is resilient and continues to find ways to win,” a senior official stated following the game.

The Vols wasted no time establishing control, scoring a touchdown on their opening drive – a nine-play, 75-yard march capped by a 23-yard pass from quarterback Joey Aguilar to tight end Ethan Davis. Tennessee has now found the endzone on its opening possession in seven of eleven games this season. The first quarter saw Tennessee outscore Florida 14-0, extending their season-long dominance in the opening frame to a remarkable 159-45 point differential.

A historic offensive performance further cemented the victory. Wide receiver Mike Matthews surpassed 700 receiving yards on the season, joining two other Tennessee teammates – a first in program history – to achieve that milestone in a single year. Only Ole Miss (2023, 2024) has accomplished this within the SEC since 2020. The Volunteers finished the game with 452 yards of total offense, the 48th time in Josh Heupel’s five seasons at the helm they’ve eclipsed the 400-yard mark.

Aguilar Leads the Charge

Senior quarterback Joey Aguilar completed 17 of 22 passes for 204 yards and one touchdown, surpassing 3,000 passing yards for the year. Aguilar is now the fifth player in Tennessee history to reach that benchmark, joining Peyton Manning, Tyler Bray, Erik Ainge, and Hendon Hooker. He currently ranks seventh in Tennessee single-season history with 3,264 yards of total offense. Aguilar’s consistency is remarkable, having thrown for over 200 yards in all 35 of his FBS starts – the longest active streak in Division I.

Bishop’s Breakout Performance

Redshirt sophomore running back DeSean Bishop enjoyed a career day, rushing for a career-high 116 yards and two touchdowns on 24 attempts. Bishop’s performance was particularly impactful in the first half, where he carried the ball 19 times. He is now the fourth player in the Heupel era to record 10 or more rushing touchdowns in a single campaign. Bishop capped Tennessee’s second and third drives with leaping 1-yard touchdown runs, giving the Vols a commanding 21-0 lead early in the second quarter.

Defensive Dominance and Special Teams Consistency

The Tennessee defense stifled the Gators’ offense, limiting them to 261 total yards – their fewest allowed against an SEC opponent this season. The Vols registered six tackles for loss, including two sacks. The defense didn’t allow a point in the first quarter for the second consecutive game and pitched a complete first-half shutout, holding Florida to just one yard of offense in the opening quarter and 110 yards by halftime.

Special teams also contributed to the victory, with redshirt sophomore kicker Max Gilbert going 4-for-4 on extra points and connecting on a 26-yard field goal. Redshirt junior punter Jackson Ross consistently pinned the Gators deep, downing both of his punts inside the 20-yard line, including one at the 1-yard line.

Heupel’s Continued Success

The win further solidifies Head Coach Josh Heupel’s impressive record. Heupel now boasts a 9-2 record against teams from the state of Florida and a 21-5 record in games played within the state. He joins General Robert Neyland as the only Tennessee head coaches to defeat Florida in at least three of their first five contests against the Gators.

Tennessee’s victory over Florida is a testament to their consistent performance under Heupel and a significant step forward in their pursuit of SEC championship contention. The team’s balanced attack, coupled with a stifling defense, proved too much for the Gators to handle, marking a memorable win for the Volunteers and their faithful fans.
