Houston Tennis Secures Dominant Road Sweep Against LMU, Extends Perfect Start to Season
The University of Houston Tennis team continued its impressive form, achieving a decisive 4-0 victory over Loyola Marymount University (LMU) at the LMU Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. This win marks the Cougars’ third consecutive sweep to begin the season, a feat not accomplished since 1990.
The Cougars (3-0) are off to their best start in over three decades, having previously swept UTSA, North Texas, and Lamar. Notably, this is the first time in program history that Houston has secured three straight road sweeps to open a season, signaling a new level of competitiveness for the team.
The match began with a hard-fought battle for the doubles point. LMU initially gained an advantage by winning on court two, but the Cougars quickly responded. Seniors Sophie Schouten and Chems Doha zeghlouli demonstrated resilience,securing a 7-6 victory on court one against Anastasia Bozova and Ada Piestrzynska. The decisive point came from juniors Petja drame and Elizaveta Morozova, who triumphed over camilia Samel-Druz and Kim-Michaela Zahraj, also by a score of 7-6.
“The doubles point was crucial, and our players showed great composure to fight back after falling behind,” a team spokesperson commented.
The momentum continued to build for Houston in singles play. Schouten delivered a commanding performance on court six, defeating Samel-Druz with a score of 6-0, 6-3. Zeghlouli followed suit, securing a straight-set victory over Sofia Perovani with identical 6-2 sets.
The Cougars demonstrated their dominance by winning all six first sets, setting the stage for a swift conclusion. Drame ultimately clinched the match for Houston, holding off Piestrzynska 6-2, 6-4 on court three.
