Simona Halep Reflects on Career, Mental Fortitude After Retirement
A former world No. 1, Simona Halep, has spoken candidly about the pressures of professional tennis and her recent retirement, acknowledging the relief of leaving behind the intense stress that accompanied her illustrious career. The Romanian player retired in February 2025 following a first-round defeat at the WTA 250 event in Cluj Napoca, Romania, bringing an end to a career marked by both triumph and controversy.
The Weight of Competition
Highly competitive tennis demands significant mental capacity, and even the most accomplished athletes grapple with the pressures of performing at the highest level. Halep, a two-time Grand Slam champion – winning Roland Garros in 2018 and Wimbledon in 2019 – openly discussed the emotional toll the sport took on her.
In an exclusive interview with The National, Halep revealed, “Honestly, I miss tennis a little. I got goosebumps walking onto Center Court during the last WTA Finals, remembering all the matches I played there.” However, she quickly added a crucial caveat: “Although, well, I admit that everything is better without the stress of matches. I no longer have those stomach pains before games, it was unbearable. Being so sensitive slowed me down a lot on the court, but it was part of me and I had to accept it.”
Accepting Past Challenges
Halep’s career wasn’t without its difficulties. She faced a suspension from the WTA circuit in October 2022 after testing positive for the banned substance Roxadustat during the US Open. The initial four-year penalty was later reduced to nine months in February 2024. Despite these setbacks, Halep expressed a sense of acceptance and pride in her journey.
“I don’t regret anything, not a single mistake: I accept everything,” she stated. “I am proud of all the good things I have achieved, but above all of how I have managed both my failures and my successes.” This sentiment underscores a mature perspective on a career defined by both peaks and valleys.
A Legacy of Success
Beyond her two Grand Slam titles, Halep amassed an impressive record, securing 24 trophies at the WTA level. She also reached the final of the 2018 Australian Open and the semifinal of the 2015 US Open, solidifying her status as one of the sport’s most consistent and successful players.
Her retirement marks the end of an era, but her reflections offer valuable insight into the mental challenges faced by elite athletes and the importance of self-acceptance in navigating a demanding career. Halep’s story serves as a reminder that success is not solely defined by trophies, but also by the resilience and grace with which one confronts adversity.
