Islamabad പതി Tens of thousands protest on Pakistani streets in support of ousted Imran Khan. Imran had called on his followers to protest peacefully against the ousting of his government by a foreign conspiracy. The demonstrations in Islamabad on Sunday night were attended by a large number of people, including women.

Crowds chanted “Friends of the United States are traitors” and raised their voices against the U.S. and the military. Slogans were also raised against Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa.

Imran, who came to power in 2018 with the blessings of the military, has been away from the military since last year. Until recently, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) activists, who had been chanting pro-military slogans, turned against the army after Imran left in disbelief. A video of several youths taking to the streets carrying placards challenging the army has been circulating on social media.

The PTI had yesterday demanded that Shahbaz, who is facing a court chargesheet in a money laundering case, should not be fielded as the prime ministerial candidate, but to no avail.

Former Union Minister Fawad Chaudhry announced in the House yesterday that he was not ready to be part of a government formed in a foreign conspiracy. Shah Mehmood Qureshi, who was also the PTI vice-president before the boycott, said, “The country has two options – the path of self-respect or the path of slavery.” Following the election of a new Prime Minister, all the MPs in Imran’s party resigned.

Imran’s image of being a leader tainted by corruption is still popular. Most of Imran’s followers are from a middle – class society tired of the domination and corruption of the Bhutto-Sharif families for decades. Observers say support for Imran has not diminished, despite the country’s recovery amid the recession.
