The international community calls for the lifting of the ban on terrorism or for changes in the law Despite stressing, Defense Secretary General Kamal Gunaratne said that the Prevention of Terrorism Act had brought about massive positivity and co-operation in creating a stable situation in Sri Lanka today, adding that despite our efforts to bring about some changes in line with the demands of the international community, the international community was acting contrary to precedent.

This was stated by Defense Secretary General Kamal Gunaratne while addressing a media briefing at the Presidential Media Center yesterday on the activities of the three forces over the past two years.

He added,

When the report of the United Nations Human Rights Council on Sri Lankan affairs was released last year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense took an in-depth look at its causes, consulted with experts who specialize in these matters, and sought the advice of the international community who assist us.

Similarly, the main allegation leveled by the international community in this regard is that the ban on terrorism should be lifted.

One side calls for the lifting of the ban on terrorism and the other calls for changes in the law. But it must be said that the Prevention of Terrorism Act itself has created enormous advantages and co-operation in creating a stable situation in Sri Lanka today.

It is safe to say that the country’s national security was assured by the implementation of the Prevention of Terrorism Act. This is my position as Secretary of Defense.

In such a situation, when the international community tells us that the Prevention of Terrorism Act should be repealed or amended or amended, the government wholeheartedly accepted it and appointed two commissions to look into it. A panel of my participants has been appointed as a person directly involved in national security matters.

We explored how to amend the Prevention of Terrorism Act in a way that does not pose any threat to national security, and submitted a report on this to the President three weeks ago.

Similarly, a parliamentary committee has been appointed to look into amendments to the Terrorism Prohibition Act. Following these two statements, the Ministry of Justice will focus on these issues and disclose the factors to the President and Parliament. The Ministry of Justice will present amendments to the Terrorism Prohibition Act.

When the international community presents a factor in these matters and presents a statement, we are prepared to respond to it, while immediately engaging in programs about it present another statement on the other side and emphasize completely different factors.

They are accused of turning retired military officers into government officials and carrying out military rule. Therefore, we are operating in the midst of such a crisis.
