Tesla Unveils Restyled Model 3 with Longer Driving Range in Multiple Markets

SHANGHAI, Sept 1 (Reuters) – Tesla has announced the release of a restyled version of the Model 3, offering a longer driving range in China, as well as other markets including Europe, the Middle East, Australia, and Japan. This move puts pressure on rival companies that are expected to unveil new electric vehicles in the coming days.

In China, which is the world’s largest auto market, the revamped Model 3 comes with a starting price that is 12% higher than the previous base rear-wheel drive model. This marks a reversal in the trend of price cuts that had sparked a price war between Tesla and its Chinese EV rivals.

The updated Model 3 is Tesla’s first new or restyled car since the launch of its popular Model Y in 2020. The company plans to commence production of its Cybertruck later this year.

The rollout of the Model 3 in China and other export markets suggests that Tesla’s Shanghai plant will be the first to manufacture the model. The company also produces the Model 3 at its Fremont plant in California.

According to Tesla’s website, the new Model 3 promises a longer driving range in China. The standard version boasts a rated range of 606 km (377 miles) based on China’s testing standards, which is approximately 9% higher than the base model it replaces in the country.

Tesla has already begun taking orders for the new Model 3 in China, with deliveries scheduled to start in the fourth quarter. In Australia, deliveries are expected to commence in January.

Recent data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) revealed that Tesla sold 64,285 China-made electric vehicles in July, experiencing a 31% decline compared to the previous month.

In a statement issued by Tesla’s China operations, the company highlighted that the restyled model features a better acoustic system, an improved and more comfortable interior, as well as a display screen for back-seat passengers. The exterior images showcased small changes that contribute to a sleeker front and new headlights.

The announcement from Tesla comes just before the Munich auto show where German automakers are anticipated to announce a series of new electric vehicles. This includes the Volkswagen ID.7 and a new electric CLA model sedan from Mercedes.

Reuters initially reported in November of last year that Tesla was working on a revamped version of the Model 3 under a project codenamed “Highland.” The project aims to reduce production costs and enhance the appeal of the model.

The new Model 3 starts at 259,900 yuan ($35,807.78) in China, according to the company’s website.
