On television or on video-on-demand (VOD) platforms, it’s impossible to escape Christmas (TV) films. Generally produced in the United States, these fictions are built around stories whose resolution is full of hope and good feelings.

Creativity is rarely there, which is even a trademark. With big plot tricks, the comforting and “silly” side of these films is perfectly assumed. Just as much as the image of a very white, conservative, family-oriented and heteronormative America.

First of all, we find universal intrigues, such as the loss of a loved one, loneliness as the holidays approach, strained family ties or serious financial difficulties. But it doesn’t take long for the “magic of Christmas” to begin… and the problems disappear.

Of course, the clichés surrounding Christmas are legion: it snows heavily, the town where the action takes place is excessively decorated with fir trees and garlands, Santa Claus is never far away, Christmas carols ring out and the main character (often female) is inevitably dressed in red or green. He always manages to reconcile with his family, find love or leave the toxic environment of his work.

To improve your knowledge of this very particular cinematic genre, we have designed a random generator of Christmas film scenarios that we have… spiced up (and somewhat Frenchified). As the tool is based on existing scenarios, the characters and plots reflect the lack of diversity they convey. It’s up to you, below!
