The Telecommunications Company (Etecsa) assures that internet speed has already been increased on the island, after starting a trial period of the submarine cable that connects Cuba with Martinique.

The evaluation of the new cable called Arimao began in April as planned, with the operation of a new station, which currently handles an initial level of traffic growth for the corresponding adjustments.

In this sense, the optimization and growth tasks that have been undertaken in the other layers of the network have allowed “during this month to increase total traffic by 17%, with the mobile service representing 83% of this value,” highlights Lidia Esther Hidalgo Rodríguez, vice president of Network Operations.

Although the poor Internet connection continues to be recurrent among Cubans, this official is in favor of the fact that an increase in transfer speed has already been perceived outside of peak hours, but even so work is being done to replace it with new equipment with greater capacity. processing in order to increase the number of clients connected to the mobile network at the same time.

“During these months, maintenance work has also been carried out to reduce problems with Internet browsing, and as a result of this action, more than one million new user sessions were generated,” he confirmed.

In addition, processes such as traffic management were optimized, and processing cards were added to manage these new sessions: “Certainly, capacities were exhausted in the last period with the exponential increase in mobile data services, with no possibilities of expansion in the existing equipment, so it was necessary to integrate and put into operation new equipment with better features, which would definitively eliminate the restriction due to the lack of capacity,” reported the Etecsa spokesperson.

In statements to Cubadebate, he commented: “We have not yet reached the transfer speed values expected by our clients, and that is the answer to the actions that continue in process, both in the addition of new international capacities, as well as the growth of new elements in other points. fundamentals of the network, to handle more users and improve the experience of using the service.

Let us remember that ETECSA and the French company Orange SA began work in December 2022 to install the submarine cable and deliver internet to Cuba from the island of Martinique. We will have to wait a little longer to see the concrete results.
