Investigation Continues into Death of Texas A&M Student in Austin’s West Campus
Austin, Texas – Authorities are actively investigating the death of 19-year-old Brianna Aguilera, a student at Texas A&M University, following an incident in the West Campus area of Austin on Saturday. The case remains open as police seek to determine the circumstances surrounding her fall from a balcony at an apartment building located at 2101 Rio Grande Street.
Aguilera was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:57 a.m. Saturday, after officers responded to a call at 12:47 a.m. The Travis County Medical Examiner will ultimately determine the official cause of death.
Family Seeks Answers, Police Deny Foul Play
The family of the young student is desperately seeking clarity as they grieve. Aguilera’s mother, Stephanie Rodriguez, shared with CBS Austin that her daughter died after falling from a balcony. Rodriguez and other family members have expressed concerns about potential foul play in Aguilera’s death, but the Austin Police Department (APD) maintains there is currently no evidence to support those claims.
“It’s just a confusing time to grieve while also looking for answers as to what happened to our baby Bri,” said Amabeli Fernandez, Aguilera’s cousin.
In a statement released Tuesday evening, APD confirmed the ongoing investigation. “Multiple detectives continue to interview witnesses, gather evidence, and work carefully through the details of the incident,” the statement read. “This case continues to be treated strictly as a death investigation, and there is no evidence to suggest or support any suspicious or criminal circumstances surrounding Ms. Aguilera’s passing.”
Timeline and Witness Accounts Remain Unclear
According to reports, Aguilera attended a tailgate event Friday night and subsequently went to a friend’s apartment. Her mother stated she did not hear from her daughter for several hours before learning of the tragic incident.
Investigators are currently working to establish a comprehensive timeline of events leading up to Aguilera’s death. Police acknowledged Tuesday that they are actively seeking information regarding who Aguilera was with at the time of the incident, stating it is “part of the active investigation.”
A key challenge facing investigators is the lack of forthcoming information from those who may have been present. “No one really that was really around Bri has come forward and given us definitive answers,” Fernandez explained.
West Campus Safety Concerns and Community Support
The incident has raised renewed concerns about safety in the West Campus neighborhood. Safehorns, a public safety group comprised of UT Austin parents and students, noted that similar incidents have occurred in the area previously.
“If anyone was there, if anyone witnessed something, something that they think may not be important but are now reflecting on it, we want them to reach out to APD,” urged Joell McNew, President of Safehorns. The group also highlighted resources available to students and community members, including the Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) at UT Austin and Tell Somebody at Texas A&M.
A GoFundMe campaign launched to support Aguilera’s family has garnered significant attention, raising over $36,000 as of Tuesday evening. The outpouring of support underscores the community’s grief and desire for justice.
Fernandez expressed a poignant plea for anyone with information to come forward. “I wish that we had a definitive timeline. That’s not going to happen if people do not come forward out of fear for whatever reason. They need to understand that this is a person, someone who was full of life.”
