For generations, Thailand has been synonymous with rice, but often as a bulk exporter. Now, the Ministry of Commerce is launching a strategy to highlight the country’s diverse and flavorful rice offerings, targeting both health-conscious consumers and professional chefs. What’s the goal? To move beyond commodity exports and position Thai rice as a premium ingredient, suitable for everything from a perfect fried rice to a comforting bowl of congee, and even low-glycemic diets.
Joint research has uncovered a treasure trove of nearly 900 native Thai rice varieties, each possessing unique genetic traits. These local strains offer the potential for higher-value positioning in both domestic and international markets, bolstering Thailand’s competitiveness in the global rice trade.
This initiative directly addresses the longstanding challenges faced by small-scale farmers, who have historically struggled with low margins and limited bargaining power when selling unmilled paddy rice. By focusing on upgrading local and geographically indicated (GI) rice through region-specific knowledge, the ministry aims to empower farmers to shift towards value-added production, leading to increased incomes and greater market influence.
Implementation is underway with 200 model farmer groups, categorized by their level of readiness. Those already certified under organic standards are expanding into new markets, with 20 varieties currently undergoing test sales in Middle Eastern destinations like Dubai. Developing groups are receiving support for processing equipment and connections to local restaurants and hotels, while entry-level groups are benefiting from training in rice selection, milling techniques, and sales channel development.
To amplify the message, the ministry is collaborating with Heliconia H Group to showcase Artisan Rice as a key ingredient on popular cooking shows broadcast across Asia. Furthermore, partnerships with Thai Airways, AirAsia, and Bangkok Airways will feature these premium rice varieties in airline lounges and onboard meals, offering passengers a taste of Thailand’s culinary heritage.
Did you know? Thailand’s rice varieties are being tailored for specific dishes, including fried rice, congee, and even diets requiring low glycemic index foods.
