Climate activists accuse the Frankfurt utility Mainova of not seriously striving for an energy transition. Your head of technology, Martin Giehl, counters this: the city cannot be supplied with green electricity alone.

It is strong talk that Alexis Passadakis from Attac Frankfurt formulates in his opening lecture to the panel discussion “Can Mainova post-fossil?”: The West coal-fired power plant operated by the Frankfurt energy supplier is a “central crime scene of the climate crisis in Frankfurt”. With its plan to replace it with a gas power plant, the activist continues, the company is complying with the strategy of global corporations to continue doing business with fossil natural gas for a long time to come. And the fact that Mainova always calls the new building a hydrogen power plant is nothing but a fig leaf. Because there will never be enough hydrogen produced without fossil fuels. “It’s a complete illusion,” says Passadakis.

This means that on Thursday evening there will be all the allegations in the event room of the Haus am Dom, which various climate groups have already presented at demonstrations and also at the general meeting of the utility, which is majority owned by the city but is listed on the stock exchange. How accurate they are is the topic of this calm debate, in which the other two participants, Mainova’s technical director Martin Giehl and Frankfurt’s head of participation Bastian Bergerhoff (The Greens), try to refute the points of criticism.
