The 14th Cerdanya Film Festival is still in the final stretch with a “very positive” assessment by the public, as explained by the organization. The present edition, which will last until this Sunday, has doubled the exhibition of feature films, from 20 to 40 in the categories of documentaries, fiction and animation. In addition, the Spanish short films that remain as winners in fiction and documentary will automatically be classified by the preselection of the Goya Awards of the Academy of Cinema, which means that many of these films will be premieres. The closing of Cinema Avinguda de Puigcerdà this September, however, forces the organization to seek a new agreement with the administrations to guarantee the continuity of the contest.

The director of the Cerdanya Film Festival, Jordi Forcada, commented that the selection of 150 films has been a crowd pleaser and that its intention is to keep improving for the next editions. One of the aspects that will need to be resolved is that of the projection equipment, since they are now renting it to Cinema Avinguda, which will close its doors in September. In this way, they want to sit down with local administrations to achieve, with their supportthat all activities have sufficient funding to give continuity to the contest.

Among the festival’s objectives is to promote interculturality and spread cinematography that normally has little visibility in the country’s cinemas, especially in the short film format. Apart from the afternoon sessions that take place at Casino Ceretà, other itinerant ones have been scheduled in Bellver de Cerdanya and in Parc dels Búnquers de Montellà i Martinet (Cerdanya) with historical content. From the beginning, the competition has also promoted a female perspective, prioritizing films in Catalan and directed by women. Thus, 50% of the films chosen are scripted and/or directed by women.

The festival, with a budget of 150,000 euros, will present this weekend a main prize per category and also a secondary one for each of these. Thus, apart from the official sections that go to competition, there are four specific transversal programs: Pyrenees (films produced or with the participation of professionals from the Pyrenees, usually with a mountain theme, rural environment, hiking…), Historical memory , Mirada social and Curtmiratges (produced and directed by women under 30). The awards are of a financial nature and this year the endowments have been extended. Specifically, 9,000 euros in prizes, 16,000 euros in per diems and 12,000 in screening rights are awarded.
