On May 4, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov took part and spoke at the 15th Islamic Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) as part of a working visit to the Republic of Gambia.

As Day.Az reports with reference to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, Minister Jeyhun Bayramov thanked Saudi Arabia for the successful experience of chairmanship in promoting unity and cooperation within the OIC, congratulated Gambia on accepting the chairmanship of the OIC and wished success in the further strengthening and development of Islamic solidarity.

In accordance with the theme of the summit, “Unity and Cooperation for a Better Future,” it was noted that Azerbaijan stands for solidarity in the fight against modern challenges based on the UN and OIC charters, as well as the common interests of the Islamic world.

The importance of proper promotion of the Islamic religion and culture in the fight against the most dangerous of such calls, unfounded trends of Islamophobia, as well as acts of burning the Holy Quran was noted.

It was said that Azerbaijan, based on its multicultural tradition and experience, supports building a more tolerant and sustainable world between different religions and cultures.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, recalling that the OIC demonstrated a consistent and unambiguous position regarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country during the past period of occupation, noted that Azerbaijan, as one of the active members of the OIC, constantly supports efforts to resolve conflicts by peaceful means within the Organization.

It was noted that Azerbaijan stands for resolving the Palestinian issue on the basis of the “two-state” principle, which currently deeply worries the entire Islamic world, as well as for providing constant support to eliminate the dire humanitarian consequences of the conflict for the Palestinian people.

It was noted that cooperation in various fields, including economic development, education, health and culture, within the framework of the OIC is gratifying, and there is also wide potential for joint action in other areas. In particular, it was stated that Azerbaijan is interested in developing cooperation with OIC countries in these sectors at a time when the country is expanding its energy portfolio and moving from traditional energy sources to alternative sources such as wind, solar and water, and also directing its strategic location and infrastructure capabilities in the field of communications.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov provided detailed information on the current regional situation, opportunities and challenges in the post-conflict period, restoration and reconstruction work in the liberated territories, the mine threat threatening these works, as well as progress in normalizing relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Speaking about Azerbaijan’s chairmanship at the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), Minister Jeyhun Bayramov emphasized the importance of the OIC, as one of the regions most affected by global climate change, taking a united position and mobilizing efforts for combat this threat.

The Final Communiqué adopted following the Banjul Summit noted that the restoration of sovereignty in all territories of Azerbaijan was welcomed, continued support for the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan was expressed, as well as the process of normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, based on mutual recognition of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of each other. friend, and in this direction Armenia was called upon to fulfill its obligations.

The communique also reflected that the name of the “Contact Group on the Issue of Aggression of the Republic of Armenia against the Republic of Azerbaijan” of the OIC was changed to “Contact Group on Elimination of the Consequences of the Aggression of the Republic of Armenia against the Republic of Azerbaijan”, and Armenia was again condemned for the destruction of examples of Islamic heritage.

Concern was expressed about the fate of the Azerbaijanis expelled from the territories of present-day Armenia during the past conflict, which caused concern, and support was expressed in this direction for their dignified return.

The communiqué confirming the holding of the 16th Islamic Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Azerbaijan in 2026 also calls for cooperation in the implementation of the summit, which will be organized in Baku.

The communiqué also welcomed the holding of the VI World Forum for Intercultural Dialogue, organized within the framework of the Baku Process, and also called for a more equitable distribution of geographical representation in the UN system, especially in the structure of the Security Council.
