The 2024 Grammy Awards, a very feminine edition for a historically male prize

“Can we savor for a second the fact that women dominated music this year? » These words, from South African comedian Trevor Noah, at the start of the 66th edition of the Grammy Awards, set the tone for this evening organized at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, Sunday February 4. There were nine of them to lift a golden statuette. In this 2024 vintage, we find the singer Miley Cyrus, with her title Flowers, voted recording of the year, artist Billie Eilish, who won song of the year, with What Was I Made For ? (you film Barbie), in collaboration with Finneas O’Connell. But it was above all Taylor Swift who left her mark on this edition of the Grammy Awards by winning, for the fourth time in her career, the title of album of the year, with her album Midnights, which constitutes a historic performance.

This celebration of the American music industry, launched in 1959, has long glorified male performances. In the ranking of artists who have won the most titles, all categories combined, there are seventeen men or male groups in the first twenty places. Since 2023, however, it is Beyoncé, with her 32 Grammy Awards, who has been at the top of this ranking.

According to a study by the think tank Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, from the University of Southern California, there were only 13.9% of women nominated in the major Grammy categories between 2012 and 2022. But the situation was even more unbalanced in the previous decades. Over the first thirty years of the Grammys, there were only three female solo winners in the album of the year category. For the other main categories, the trend is similar, except for the best new artists category, where women became the majority earlier.
