This edition will be marked by the participation of talented European and Moroccan artists who will perform on the grounds of the historic Chellah site, offering music lovers “a variety of sounds and atmospheres transcending borders”, indicates a press release from the Delegation of the EU in Morocco.
Coinciding this year with Europe Day, celebrated on May 9, the various artistic and cultural meetings of this edition aim to make the diversity of artistic and cultural expressions a universal language of emotion, sharing and peace, adds the same source.
“The world needs strong messages and tangible actions in favor of peace and understanding between peoples. This is the symbolism that we want to give to this edition of the Chellah Jazz Festival which is being held in turbulent times”, underlined the EU Ambassador to Morocco, Patricia Llombart Cussac, quoted in the press release.
In the eyes of the European diplomat, music is “a perfect illustration of how diversity enhances and enriches dialogue between peoples”.
“The harmony and the precious moments of union within this festival – which is intended to be an ode to the fusion between European jazz and Moroccan music – indeed admirably embody the partnership between Morocco and the European Union, particularly in its human and cultural dimensions,” she assured.
For this 26th edition, the organizers promise exceptional musical moments with artists who will perform every evening from 8 p.m. for concerts that will delight the public.
On the menu for this edition are a concert by German trumpeter Markus Stockhausen, accompanied by musician and poet Aziz Sahmaoui, as well as a performance which will bring together the French group Sarab and the talented qanoun player, Hiba Mekkaoui.
The program also includes a musical meeting on stage between the Spanish pianist Daniel Garcia and the oud magician, Driss El Maloumi, specialist in oriental and Amazigh melodies, as well as a performance by the Munsch Trio joined by the Moroccan group Urban Folklore.
Elise Einarsdotter’s Ensemble, composed of modern jazz, Swedish folklore and the captivating voice of singer Léna Willemark, will harmoniously combine modern jazz with traditional Swedish music. The quintet will meet Zahra Regragui, percussionist, to color their musical journey with the warm rhythms of Morocco.
For its part, the Italian group JEMM will perform on stage in the company of Maalem Mokhtar Gania, younger brother of the late Mahmoud Gania, emblematic figure of Gnaoua music, and his two sons Houssam and Hamza Gania.
In addition to musical performances, the festival program includes masterclasses for musicians and singers, led by Climène Zarkan, singer of the group Sarab, Aziz Sahmaoui, Gnaoua singer and multi-instrumentalist and Adrien Lambinet, trombonist and composer.
The public will also be enchanted by a traveling concert in the streets of Rabat, offered by the group Salt, with its jazz melodies fusing swing, Latin, ska and Cajun, imbued with joie de vivre.
