the 300 Spaniards who landed in Scotland to destroy England

There are many legends that fill every corner of the Scottish highlands. And no matter how mythical and unreal they may seem, they can always hide an iota of truth. One of the most popular is the one behind Eilean Donan Castle. The locals say that, on May 10, 1719, an English fleet lowered sail near this fortress, located on a small, green island in the northwest of Scotland. The British caught the defenders, among whom there were Spanish soldiers, by surprise.

The garrison saw no other solution to save their lives than to throw themselves into the waters, and so they all did except for one man: a red-faced captain who preferred to die in the heart of those walls rather than live another day with the humiliation of having escaped. They say that his ghost still inhabits the place, sad and overwhelmed by that end that he himself chose.

But, in this podcast, we are not going to go into the existence or not of ghosts; That is up to each person’s opinion. Ours is history and, even if you don’t believe it, there were Spanish soldiers sent by Philip V in that Scottish area a few months before. What the legend does not say is that they fought against the ‘Royal Navy’ to defend this lost castle in the Scottish highlands and that they had arrived at the beginning of the 18th century to try to raise the clans of Scotland against Great Britain. This is what the historian and professor tells us Enrique F. Siciliaauthor of ‘The Portuguese War‘.

This is ‘We are in history’.
