Barcelona It’s already Christmas in Badalona. This Saturday, the lighting of the tree in Plaça de la Vila, of relatively normal dimensions, was done in front of a few dozen people. This is not, however, what most people wanted to see. A 20-minute walk from Plaça de la Vila has also lit a tree made up of 82,000 lights, 40 meters high and 15 meters in diameter. Thousands of people attended the lighting of the tree installed in Plaza del Presidente Tarradellas (in front of the municipal pavilion) that the mayor of Badalona, Xavier Garcia Albiol, wanted to be the biggest in Spain.
After competing for a few weeks with the mayor of Vigo, Abel Caballero, to see who kept the title of the biggest tree in Spain, it seems that neither of them took it. The competition will not be won by any municipality, but by a shopping centre. As RAC1 progressed, the tree of Nevada Shopping, in Granada, is 57 meters high. This leaves Albiol in fourth position, also behind Cartes—a town in Cantabria—and Vigo. In any case, during the inauguration of the tree, Albiol was not convinced by his opponents: “Who has the best tree in Catalonia, in Spain and in the world is Badalona”, he said.
The Badalona tree was inaugurated with a festive tone, and the lighting of the lights was attended by the Badalona Modern Music School and a DJ who gave way to a light show. The same sequence can be seen every working day at 18.00 and 19.00 hours, and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, every hour on the dot between 17.00 and 21.00 hours.
Despite the uproar generated by Albiol, it should be borne in mind that Christmas in Badalona is not limited to the 40-metre tree. According to the mayor himself, this year will be the first year in which all the neighborhoods of the city have Christmas decorations, in a Christmas campaign that will cost the Badalón council a total of 1.7 million euros. “Christmas has already arrived in Badalona”, Albiol wrote today on X, former Twitter.
