Girona, Celrà, Cassà de la Selva, Llagostera and Palamós will be the venues for the Art & Gavarres Festival, which in its sixth edition aims to raise awareness among society about the drought that is increasingly affecting the natural heritage, as well as raising awareness of the need for appropriate use of water. The International Festival of Art and Landscape in Les Gavarres will take place between September 9 and November 9 and this year a total of 17 interventions are scheduledby national and international artists, will link the territory and nature with artistic expression.
The Cultural Center la Mercè de Girona hosted the presentation of this year’s edition this Monday evening with an act that had the interventions of Stick Fangsfirst vice-president of the Provincial Council of Girona, acting president of the Consorci de les Gavarres and mayor of Cassà de la Selva; Sergi CotCouncilor for Climate Action of Girona City Council and Ingrid Guardioladirector of Bòlit, Center for Contemporary Art in Girona.
Sergi Cot has emphasized the need to “rethink the uses we give to water as a society”, modifying the current model. In her turn, Íngrid Guardiola recalled that Art & Gavarres fits in with the line of activities promoted by Bòlit Nature, who has been wondering about the nature of things and the things of nature since 2021 and congratulated the organization of a festival “that is built outside the walls”. Finally, Pau Presas has highlighted that “Art & Gavarres becomes a different way of highlighting a protected natural environment, from a perspective that wants to open the door to other audiences”. “It is an artistic expression that vindicates art and nature, and that this year, more than ever, is committed to raising awareness of the hottest environmental problems,” he added.
The act of presentation also included the representation of walkers, an inclusive dance piece produced by the SETBA Foundationby the users of the Drissa Foundation mental health organization, with the participation of the dancer Maria Ribera.
New collaborations
As a novelty, this edition of the festival begins a collaboration with the UPC Foundation, which participates with a work by the students of the Master’s in parametric design in architecture, directed by the CODA Architects studio. The contest also hosts a creation by the Etèries collective, winners of the Tortoise festival A Cel Obert, thanks to the collaboration with the Transefímers Network, which brings together different ephemeral art festivals in Catalonia. Likewise, this year the festival also has artists from other regional art centers, such as CDAN de Huesca, Espai Tònic, Bòlit or La Volta.
The Art & Gavarres Festival is organized by the Consorci de les Gavarres, an organization attached to the Diputació de Girona, with the collaboration of Bòlit, Contemporary Art Center, and the councils that are part of it, and with the support of the OSIC (Cultural Initiative Support Office) of the Department of Culture.
