This meeting, attended by the Comorian Minister of Economy and Investment, in charge of Economic Integration, Ahmed Ali Bazi, and the Deputy Director General of the WTO, Ambassador Zhang Xiangchen, was the opportunity to note tangible progress in the compliance of Comorian legislation with WTO rules and standards.
At the start of this meeting, Mr. Zniber, in his capacity as chairman of the Working Group, welcomed the efforts made, the progress and the achievements of the Comoros, while specifying that this process is at an advanced stage, which should move towards its realization in the coming weeks, to allow the Union of the Comoros to fully adhere to the multilateral trading system embodied by the WTO.
The Moroccan diplomat did not fail to underline the constructive commitment of the Union of the Comoros, which has resulted in multiple reforms on the legislative and institutional, commercial and economic levels, despite a difficult international situation.
The Chairman of the works also called on delegations to support the accession which should be formalized during the 13th ministerial conference, which will be held from February 26 to 29 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
For his part, the Comorian minister praised Morocco’s political and diplomatic support in the context of this accession file, as well as the efforts of the presidency of the Working Group. In addition, he provided an overview of the progress made by his country on the legislative and administrative levels since the 8th meeting of the Working Group, held on January 19, 2023.
After the presentation of the Working Group’s report, around twenty delegations took the floor to underline the “very positive” development of this file, reaffirming the commitment to complete this process.
For his part, Mr. Xiangchen highlighted the work accomplished by the Comoros since the 8th session, while describing the file of the said country as “mature” which should be crowned by its accession to the WTO, putting an end to work which lasted more than 17 years.
The Moroccan delegation made a statement, in which it reiterated the firm support for this brother country, being convinced that the accession of the Comoros to the WTO would have positive repercussions on its socio-economic development, would consolidate the African and Arab presence in this international forum and would give new impetus to the multilateral trading system, advocated by the WTO.
