“The analysis of the situation in Palestine requires that the question of genocide be raised”

theDoes being considered a democracy immunize you against any criminal politics driven by the desire for revenge and other sad passions? This is not what history teaches us. ⁣Does the fact of having suffered serious criminal attacks give the victim the right to violate the most basic obligations in the conduct of hostilities?‍ This is not what international law says.

So⁤ why ⁢refrain from talking about genocide when talking about the situation in Gaza? In a report of almost 300 pages published on Thursday 5 December, the institution Amnesty International also warns, in great detail, about the situation. The organization therefore believes that it has identified sufficient evidence to conclude that between 7 October 2023 and July 2024, Israel was responsible for acts ‌constituting genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

The gap between the severity⁢ of⁤ the situation described by the findings coming‍ from the ⁢field and the prudence of the conclusions ‌we allow ourselves to draw from them can thus only surprise. If we⁢ are⁤ to be⁣ aware of the emotional charge ⁤of the accusation of genocide, analysis of the situation in Palestine nevertheless⁢ requires that the question be asked. And that the debate is not hindered by various intimidation tactics. ⁣Violations of the law should be our only compass.

Other types of acts

a) Murder of group members;

b) Serious injury to the physical or mental integrity of group members;

c) Intentional submission of the group to conditions of existence ⁣intended to cause its ‌total or partial physical destruction;

d) Measures aimed at preventing ‌births within the group;

e) Forced transfer of children⁢ from the group to another group”.

And ‍if genocide is observed, the perpetrator must be⁣ held accountable.

the ‍definition of this crime does not⁣ require the total destruction of the targeted group: the commission of certain acts done with the intent to destroy the group, ” in whole or in part ”, is enough.It is not ⁣necessary to demonstrate the existence of a genocidal plan to characterize a ⁣genocide. The definition also does not limit acts of genocide to “systematization of ⁢murders”.
