At the moment, the discussions are ongoing. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mnatsakan Safaryan mentioned in a conversation with journalists in the National Assembly, addressing the question of what decision the government made regarding the villages of Tavush.
“As I mentioned, the discussions are continuing within the commissions’ work now. They work on the basis of what we have mentioned, which has been made public. We are talking about the Alma-Ata declaration and the border that existed during the Soviet period. The Alma-Ata declaration is the basis, the maps, as we mentioned, are the most recent maps existing in the Soviet period. We have already made statements related to it,” he said.
When asked why it was decided to start demarcation from Tavush, the deputy minister answered. “Discussions about it are also ongoing. We have to wait for the summary of those discussions and the final conclusions, after that there will be official information.”
Regarding the observation, the Azerbaijani side stated that the territories of those 4 villages should be immediately vacated before the border demarcation is carried out. Mnatsakanyan replied: “The Armenian side has also expressed its position, and the vital territories of 31 villages are also within the framework of this discussion.”
And why the demarcation process does not start from Jermuk, Gegharkunik or Syunik, where our territories are occupied, said the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. “Since the border demarcation works are entering the practical stage, certain studies are being carried out, and we will make these works public at the end of these discussions.”
He emphasized that Armenia has repeatedly made statements regarding the occupation of its sovereign territory. “The part of the demarcation works, regarding which there are certain agreements, has already been made public, official statements have been made. I have no additional information at this stage.”
