This event concludes the series of exhibitions commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Bank Al-Maghrib Museum, the celebration program of which was launched in July 2022.

These are the exhibition “Coinage of ancient Morocco: effigies and symbols”, which was held in the Mohamed Drissi Gallery of Contemporary Art in Tangier, the exhibition “The way of the line, calligraphy between art and currency in Morocco” which was presented in one of the wings of the Bahia Palace in Marrakech, the exhibition “An archeology of images, the Moroccan banknote through the prism of history and art” which is held at the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rabat, as well as the exhibition “Dar As-Sikkah: Art and Savoir-faire”, which took place at the Bank Al-Maghrib Museum in homage to the Dar As-Sikkah Institution.

During this conference, a retrospective was presented on the historical and artistic evolution of monetary production, focusing on four key periods: Antiquity, the Islamic era, the contemporary era and contemporary history.

This event was also an opportunity for the Bank Al-Maghrib Museum to unveil its “Art and Currency” catalog, which is the result of the merger of the four exhibitions organized to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

More than a simple compilation of exhibited works, this work weaves a narrative framework which illustrates the interconnection between the four exhibitions. Each of these exhibitions, while distinct, is intertwined, in this work, with the three others to offer a new interpretation of the collection of the Bank Al-Maghrib Museum.

This work of artistic aggregation illustrates the unity and continuity of artistic and historical diversity within the Bank Al-Maghrib Museum. It also highlights the distinctive characteristics and major historical and artistic aspects of Moroccan numismatic heritage which spans more than 2000 years.

This conference aims to bring the public closer to a set of subjects relating to currencies and art, indicated in a press statement the director of the Museum department at Bank-Al Maghrib, Rochdi Bernoussi, noting that currency , despite its commercial and economic importance, remains a work of art.

For her part, the general curator of the exhibition, Nadia Sabri, stressed that the artistic dimension is illustrated in the four exhibitions through the capacity of currency to imitate works of art.

Ms. Sabri, who is also a research professor at the Faculty of Educational Sciences, explained that these exhibitions highlight the pluralistic and selective nature of the materials used in the manufacture of coins, in connection with a history that spans over 2000 years of development of this art industry.

She also added that the challenge was to achieve harmony between the different components of the four exhibitions, without compromising the aesthetic and artistic character.
