Production Delays Push Release Date to February 2028
The latest stoppage adds another chapter to a winding development timeline for The Batman Part II, which began filming in London in June after multiple script-writing delays by Reeves and co-writer Mattson Tomlin. Studio schedules have shifted the movie’s premiere several times, moving from an initial October 2025 target to October 2026, then to October 2027, and subsequently to February 2028.

Industry sources report that it remains too early to determine whether the current pause will force another adjustment to the February 18, 2028 release date. The original 2022 film also faced notable shutdowns, including a pandemic-related halt in 2020 and a brief pause that September following a positive COVID test on set.
Reeves directed the original 2022 movie, which grossed $770.3 million globally. To bridge the gap between films, the 2024 Max television spinoff series titled The Penguin starred Colin Farrell as the titular villain. In addition, Reeves produced an upcoming Clayface movie focusing on the Batman villain, which is slated to arrive on October 23.
Star-Studded Cast and Separate Universe Status
The expanded ensemble also features new additions Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Charles Dance, Sebastian Koch, and Gil Perez-Abraham. Also confirmed to return from the first film are Jayme Lawson as Gotham’s Mayor Bella Reál and Gil Perez-Abraham as Gotham City Police Department Officer Martinez.
Pattinson’s iteration of the Caped Crusader exists outside the main DC Universe franchise overseen by James Gunn, which includes David Corenswet’s upcoming Superman films and its 2027 sequel titled Man of Tomorrow. While discussing the sequel’s direction, Pattinson described the script as a real left turn
from the original movie while maintaining its distinct atmospheric tone.

James Gunn previously defended the scheduling gaps for superhero sequels on Threads, noting that lengthy intervals between installments are common across major franchises. Pointing to historical examples, Gunn wrote that there were seven years between Alien and Aliens, fourteen years between The Incredibles, seven years between the first two Terminator movies, thirteen years between Avatar films, thirty-six years between Top Gun releases, and six years between Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Vol. 3. Gunn added that Reeves was fully dedicated to crafting the best film he possibly can.
Corporate Transition at Warner Bros. Discovery
The production pause unfolds as David Ellison’s Skydance is expected to finalize its $111-billion merger with Warner Bros. Discovery on Tuesday. DC chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran are slated to remain under the incoming corporate leadership structure, whereas Warner Bros. film executives Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy are among the leaders departing.
