Tobias Harris Questionable for Spurs Opener Due to Calf Strain

San Antonio Spurs forward Tobias Harris will miss the preseason and faces a questionable status for the Oct. 20 regular-season opener against the Oklahoma City Thunder after sustaining a left calf strain in training camp.

Team officials confirmed that the 34-year-old veteran will be reevaluated following the conclusion of the preseason schedule. Harris did not participate in the Silver & Black scrimmage on Sunday and will sit out all five preseason games while the medical staff monitors his recovery.

Head coach Mitch Johnson announced the setback before the tipoff of the team’s annual intrasquad scrimmage at the Frost Bank Center, revealing that free agent acquisition Tobias Harris is dealing with a strained left calf.

Coach Mitch Johnson Adopts a Cautious Approach

Johnson made it clear that the organization will not rush the recovery process or pressure the veteran forward to return before he is fully prepared.

It’s a calf strain; the seriousness is what it is. We won’t rush him at all. I guess the question will be: is he ready for the season opener? Totally questionable, and we will not push that at all.

There is no concern of this level of seriousness, and at the same time, we will not rush him at all.

Harris signed a two-year, $31 million contract negotiated through agent Torrel Harris of Unique Sports Management in July after spending the previous two seasons with the Detroit Pistons. A productive veteran known for reliable shotmaking and floor spacing, Harris averaged 13.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in 27.7 minutes per night across 63 appearances during Detroit’s 60-win campaign, helping propel the Pistons to the top of the Eastern Conference standings.

Roster Impact and Opening Night Rematch Against Oklahoma City

In his absence, players such as Julian Champagnie, Carter Bryant, Harrison Barnes, and Keldon Johnson stand to absorb additional minutes. Champagnie would have competed directly with Harris in the rotation, having previously signed a long-term deal this offseason after contributing heavily during the team’s postseason run where the 16-year veteran Harris averaged 17.4 points and 7.4 rebounds while shooting 44% from the field and 33% from deep across 20 playoff appearances in 2025 and 2026.

The regular-season opener is scheduled for Oct. 20 against the Oklahoma City Thunder in a rematch of the Western Conference Finals, where San Antonio previously claimed eight of twelve total matchups culminating in a Game 7 victory on the road. Whether Harris recovers in time to suit up for the opening tip remains undetermined as the five-game preseason slate gets underway starting with a home matchup against the Atlanta Hawks.
