The BBVA Foundation has awarded this week to six young scientists for their brilliant careers as senior researchers in the 2023 Computer Science Awards. The ceremony has highlighted the “transformative power” of cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the application of technology in areas aimed at preserving the environment. Also has recognized the excellence of the company Open Canarias for developing an advanced energy saving system.

These awards, worth 5,000 euros each, differentiate between two modalities: one dedicated to scientists under 30 years of age and another for researchers, public and private entities dedicated to computing.

Promoted jointly with the Spanish Computer Science Society (SCIE), they recognize the “originality and excellence” in the fields of Artificial Intelligence and sustainable software research, as indicated by the BBVA Foundation in a statement.

“The researchers we recognize today are men and women who are helping to shape what is undoubtedly modern technology. most powerful, transformative and versatile in the history of humanity“said Silvia Churruca, the director of Institutional Relations of the BBVA Foundation, during the ceremony. At the same time, Churruca has noted the risks and challenges posed by the rapid emergence of AI in the current panorama: “Researchers must engage in a dialogue with specialists in other fields such as social sciences and humanitiesto ensure that it is developed based on ethical standards”.

The winners in the modality Young Computer Researchers They are: Roco Carratal Sez, assistant professor of Computer Science at the University of Valladolid; Miriam Esteve Campello, researcher at the San Pablo CEU Foundation University; Manuel Lagunas Arto, applied scientist at Amazon; Alberto Martín López, postdoctoral researcher at Universidad de Constructor and the University of Italian Switzerland (Lugano, Switzerland); Francisco Muoz Martínez, computer software systems engineer at Intel Corporation; and Marc Serrami Amors, professor at City, University of London.

Those awarded with the National Informatics Awards They are: Julio Abascal González, professor of Architecture and Computer Technology at the University of the Basque Country/EHU, José García Santesmases Award; Antonio Plaza Miguel, professor of Architecture and Computer Technology at the University of Extremadura, Aritmel Award; Fermn Sánchez Carracedo, professor of Computer Science at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, Ramon Llull Award; and the company Open CanariasAngela Ruiz Robles Award.

During the event, the president of the SCIE, Inmaculada Garca Fernndez, highlighted the essential role that computing plays currently, “not only as a work tool, but also as part of the basic and fundamental knowledge that every citizen must acquire.”

For this reason, García has indicated that the association will continue working so that this knowledge is of “compulsory nature” in the Spanish educational system from Primary Education to High School.

Miriam Esteve, one of the winners, is dedicated to improving AI machine learning, and has valued the “remarkable improvement” of the quality and precision of these systems in companies and public organizations. “Something promising as it opens the door to better knowledge of the behavior of these entities in terms of their management of resources and achievement of objectives.”

Despite being made up of zeros and ones, the technological field is broad as itself and reaches projects as exciting as that of Manuel Lagunas. His research focus studies how the visual system of the human brain works to be able to generate more precise images with computer graphics.

Los Computer Science Awards They have been held consecutively for six years and recognize the work of young scientists like them, the most outstanding in their area, as well as the best doctoral theses in this area. The history of the SCIE National Awards has, however, 18 years of excellence. A common project that relies on technology as an “engine” to improve people’s lives and the future of the planet.
