The intense solar activity captured in a magical moment; the trails of hundreds of stars above a World War I trench memorial at Vimy in northern France; the Milky Way over an abandoned diamond processing plant in Namibia or a snapshot of Jupiter flanked by two of its moons, Io and Europa, are just some of the powerful finalist images of the current edition of the Astronomy Photograper of the Yearorganized by the Royal Greenwich Observatory.

With the special support of Liberty Specialty Markets and in association with the publication BBC Sky at Night Magazine, the finalist images of this 2023 were selected from more than 4,000 entries from amateur and professional photographers from 64 different countries.

Another of this year’s astronomical highlights was the astonishing activity of the auroras, which could be seen in all their splendor over the skies of the United Kingdom and Ireland.
