After an initial increase in January, the price of gas could be revised upwards again next July. On franceinfo, the president of the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE), Emmanuelle Wargon, announced that tariffs should increase from 5.5% to 10.4%.

An increase recommended by the CRE from Friday in a note. Thus, consumers who heat with gas will be affected by an increase of 5.5%, or 7.30 euros per month, while those who use gas only for hot water or cooking will see their bill increase by 10 .4%.

“The reality of the cost of using the network”

Emmanuelle Wargon explained, speaking to franceinfo, that network maintenance was responsible for this price change which is “the reality of the cost of using the network”. According to her, the gas passes through pipes that “must be maintained” and “replaced when they fail”. She also argued that gas consumption was falling and therefore “the cost of this maintenance is spread across fewer people”. The CRE ensures that this increase “makes it possible to maintain a high level of security for the networks”, as well as to contribute to the energy transition by financing new biomethane infrastructures. Emmanuelle Wargon promised that “the price that arrives for the next four years” will help to “gradually reduce the share of fossil gas in the gas we use”.
