Impeachment‌ Request Dismissed for Lack of Foundation

The latest request from the impeachment interpellant, Gissela Garzón, was dismissed on August 10,⁣ 2024, due to a ⁢lack of foundation. The ruling party claims this decision is motivated by persecution⁣ of prosecutor Diana Salazar.

The Legislative Administration Council (CAL)⁤ rejected the request from Correa’s assemblywoman, ⁢Gissela Garzón, to resume the impeachment trial of‌ prosecutor Diana‌ Salazar ⁤Mendez. This request was dismissed even before‌ a vote ‌could be held in the National Assembly.

Pro-government assemblyman Diego Matovelle, who is part of the CAL, stated ⁣that the request⁣ lacked sufficient evidence to justify the impeachment process. He emphasized⁣ that this is not the first time Garzón ⁢has requested information regarding the prosecutor’s ‌high-risk pregnancy.

Garzón denies ever requesting sensitive ‌or private information about Salazar’s health. He argues‌ that⁣ the Attorney General’s Office,⁣ which previously suspended the impeachment, has established ⁢biased and inaccurate criteria for ⁤evaluating⁢ the prosecutor’s capacity.

Matovelle refrained from discussing potential sanctions⁣ or⁣ warnings⁢ for Garzón, acknowledging the majority opinion within the CAL that the matter ⁤is already ⁢clear.

“I think there is a kind‍ of persecution and harassment that they want to cause to the State Attorney.” ‍ – Diego Matovelle, ADN assemblyman.
