DECRYPTION – The overall consumption of antibiotics is not the primary cause of resistance in the majority of the bacteria tested.

It is a silent pandemic that is progressing quietly. Yet the threat it poses to global health is very real. The rise of antibiotic resistance increases the risk of easily controlled pathologies becoming fatal again. Thus, it is estimated that 1.27 million deaths worldwide were the direct result of antibiotic resistance and that 4.95 million were associated with it in 2019. A study published in the journal The Lancet Planetary Health, conducted by scientists from the Institut Pasteur, Inserm and the universities of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines and Paris-Saclay, offers a statistical model to understand the main determinants of the global dynamics of this resistance.
