This Monday, the Círculo de Bellas Artes presented its 2023-2024 cultural season with which it aspires to be a refuge for culture in this time of confrontation and noise. This is how he highlighted it Valerio Rocco, director of the Circle, for whom “this refuge must be open to other disciplines, such as science, to diversity and to self-reflection on the role of culture in our days.” The Circle has designed spaces in which different ways of seeing the world will coexist and participate through debate, reflection and active listening.

The press conference was chaired by the Minister of Culture, Tourism and Sports of the Community of Madrid, Mariano de Paco, representing the entities that make up the Board of Trustees of the Círculo Consortium (Madrid City Council, Community of Madrid and Ministry of Culture and Sports). De Paco has highlighted the quality of the proposals presented, both scenic, musical, exhibition and training “which reflect the important work carried out and the international reach that this entity has in the field of cultural creation and dissemination.”

«We present a cultural season with a large number of artistic manifestations, but also with a marked transversal character. An exhibition, for example, involves a series of complementary processes to the theme it presents,” highlighted, for his part, the president of the Círculo de Bellas Artes, Juan Miguel Hernández León.

The Círculo’s exhibition season has begun with an exhibition dedicated to Pilar Aymerich. This commitment to Spanish photography will continue in February with Colita and the exhibition focused on ‘Antifémina’, a critical and vindictive cult book published in 1977, and quickly withdrawn, which addressed the role of women in the sexist society of that time. In May the CBA will welcome Cristina García Rodero, another National Photography Award (1996). There will also be two exhibitions signed by Eduardo Momeñe and Gervasio Sánchez which, twenty-five years later, will show the evolution of those affected by the landmines that he photographed in ‘Vidas minadas’.

European Alliance of Academies

The defense of artistic freedom is the pillar on which the European Alliance of Academies is based. The Círculo, like Casa Europa, has been part of this alliance since its founding in 2020. The European constant in the Círculo’s programming is reinforced this season with the Spanish presidency of the EU, during the second half of 2023. A series of forums in which some of the most relevant problems and challenges we face at the European level will be discussed, such as social sustainability, democratic quality and socioeconomic transitions.

The Círculo de Bellas Artes will also focus on common work between culture and the different scientific disciplines, and in the coming months it will delve into the innovative dimension of the arts and humanities and their impact on society. Musically, the season begins with Círculo de Cámara, the classical music series that celebrates its fifth edition and stands out for the international status of its program and for offering top-level chamber music accessible to all audiences. And even older, this is the sixteenth edition of Jazz Círculo. Dance will also have an important role, thanks to collaborations with the National Dance Company.

Regarding the activities dedicated to the Humanities, the awarding of the Circle’s Gold Medal to the Portuguese architect stands out. Eduardo Souto de Moura (October 20) and the analysis around the 50th anniversary of the coup d’état in Chile, an event that transcended the local and that generated a great political, artistic and social movement. The proposal consists of carrying out a multidisciplinary study through conferences, debates and the screening of films such as Missing, by Costa Gavras.

In the film section, this honor will be celebrated by screening series such as those dedicated to Pedro Almodóvar, António Reis, Margarida Cordeiro and Jean Eustache and welcoming creators of well-known series, such as Jesse Armstrong (‘Succession’).
