The Circus Fair in Carrer de la Bisbal starts its 28th edition this Friday, offering shows until Sunday. This year the activity arrives in the city with more than 40 scheduled performances. Among these you can see a pinch of the most risky proposals and those that are aimed at all kinds of spectators cannot be missing. The exhibition, co-organised by the Circus Fair and the City Council, wants to continue betting on contemporary circus, as well as the more traditional.

Places such as Plaça de la Pietat (Benet Mercader), Passeig Marimon Asprer, the Jutjats car park, Plaça Carreras Dagas, Plaça Germans Sitjar, Plaça Major, Parc 8 de Març or Plaça de la Sardana will continue to offer its spaces to host the fair. At the same time, there will be two more locations that expect to be filled with visitors during the three days of performances: Carrer Ample and the space behind the Pere Plaja Football Field.

In this edition a total of 35 companies participate, among which their diversity of provenance stands out. And the fact is that, while close to half of the performances will be by Catalan artists, the other half will be divided between participants from the rest of the state and from other countries around the world. These are France, Italy, Argentina and Brazil.

Clowning, juggling, balancing, diabolo and contemporary dance to hair suspension, aerials or cyr wheel, among other surprising samples, are some of the proposals offered by the fair. After almost 30 editions, la Bisbal has become a meeting point for a group of artists who certainly share one thing: they are art lovers, albeit in different expressions.

The Cirque Pardi company will be in charge of starting this edition with the multidisciplinary show Rouge Nord at 20:30 it is up to Truca Circus to close a circus weekend with its show, also multidisciplinary, Sopla! at 10:30 p.m. Among these are also the groups Troposfera.xyz, Kerol, Dj Dolça, Moi Jordana, Pere Hosta, Cia Caida, Cia Mala Brigo, Pauline Zoé, Les Enfants serieux, Sienta la cabeza or Du’k’to. Some like the PakiPaya Company will show their trapeze show up to four times.

At this time, 40% of the tickets for the fair’s paid shows have already been sold. The organization considered that, “for what we are used to, this is good news”.

It should be noted that there were shows that almost had all the tickets sold out, a fact that denotes the growing popularity of the most plural and diverse circus festival.

“What we do is not simple, it’s not a circus for the sake of circus, we want to send a message”

Companyia Caida, one of the 35 participants in this year’s Fira del Circ in Carrer de l’Empordà, brings Aida Pascual to show a very special project. The artist, who has taken up residency at this year’s Fira del Circ, will perform next July 15 at Plaça Joan Carreras Dragas at 8:30 p.m. The fixed trapeze is the protagonist, but the day would be incomplete without the verticals, the clown and the floor acrobatics that the Catalan artist will offer to his audience.

Pascual will proudly teach Insomnia, that’s the title of the show. In this he wanted to show the most common mental disorders in the Western world, with the aim of making them visible. He argues that “many times they are silenced, I want to put it on the table because they should not live alone”. However, he makes it clear that “it’s about being realistic, but at the same time doing comedy, I don’t want to make a show that’s difficult to watch or very cumbersome”.

With all this, he also wants to denounce how mental health is treated in today’s society. “The idea is to have an echo, I don’t want to finish the project here”. And the fact is that the circus artist, who assures that Saturday’s show is not the finished product, does not plan to leave this theme in the short term. “I started what is now Insomnia at the end of last year, when I already had a similar performance. At that moment I wanted to take advantage of the run”, adds Pascual.

In addition, he takes the opportunity to remember that the world of artists is very complicated, “especially the circus ones”. He says that bets like the Circus Fair are very important to make visible those artists who cannot always make a living “doing what they love most”. “What we do is not simple, it’s not a circus for the sake of circus, we want to get a message across and we can’t always”.
