Catholic Community of Sant’Egidio Urges More Than Just Medication in Fight Against AIDS

The Catholic Community of Sant’Egidio has highlighted the need for more than just medication in the fight against AIDS. In a statement released on Friday evening, the community emphasized the importance of continuous training, financial resources, and greater synergy between all actors working in this area.

The statement comes in light of World AIDS Day, which is celebrated on December 1st every year. According to Sant’Egidio, continuous information and awareness-raising activities in communities are crucial to reduce the number of new infections, especially among the young population.

Sant’Egidio has been actively supporting health systems in 10 countries in sub-Saharan Africa for 22 years through its own “Dream” program. The program operates 50 health centers and 28 molecular biology laboratories, and provides training to local staff and free prevention and treatment services to around 500,000 affected people.

The German Foundation for World Population reports that 39 million people worldwide are currently living with HIV, with 53 percent of those affected being female. Alarmingly, around 4,000 young women between the ages of 15 and 24 become newly infected with HIV every week, with the majority of these cases occurring in sub-Saharan Africa.

The community’s plea for more holistic approaches in the fight against AIDS comes as a reminder of the ongoing challenges in combating the disease. It serves as a call to action for governments, organizations, and communities to work together to provide comprehensive support to those affected by HIV/AIDS.]
