The Complicated Romantic History of Jermaine and Randy Jackson

by ethan.brook News Editor

For the world, the Jackson family represents the pinnacle of pop synchronization and soulful harmony. But behind the choreographed steps and gold records lies a familial map so intricate it often defies conventional logic. Now, as the family prepares for the release of the highly anticipated biopic Michael, a new generation is stepping forward to heal old wounds.

At the center of this reconciliation is Jaafar Jackson, the son of Jermaine Jackson, who has been cast to play his late uncle, the King of Pop. While the casting is a testament to Jaafar’s uncanny resemblance and talent, the project has served a deeper purpose: acting as a bridge across a decades-old romantic rivalry between Randy and Jermaine Jackson.

The tension between the brothers stems from a complicated history with Alejandra Oaziaza, a Colombian-born fashion designer. In a twist that created a family tree of half-siblings who are too cousins, Oaziaza was once the partner of Randy Jackson before marrying his older brother, Jermaine.

A Divided House: The Alejandra Triangle

The roots of the conflict date back to 1986, when Randy Jackson, the youngest of the brothers, began dating Alejandra Oaziaza. The two were together for several years and shared two children: Genevieve, born in 1989, and Randy Jr., born in 1992. Though they never married, the relationship was a significant chapter in Randy’s early adult life.

However, the dynamic shifted dramatically in 1995. In a move that shocked both the family and the public, Alejandra and Jermaine Jackson wed in a secret ceremony. According to reports, Alejandra felt that Randy did not sufficiently appreciate her, whereas she viewed Jermaine as more “family-oriented.”

The betrayal was felt deeply by Randy. He expressed his disbelief and anger over his brother’s decision to marry the mother of his children, stating, “Joe Blow down the street, but my brother? In the same house? She’s a pig and my brother is a fool.”

Collateral Damage and Family Friction

The romantic rivalry between Randy and Jermaine Jackson was not the only source of tension during this era. The 1990s were marked by volatility across the family, including a public rift between Jermaine and Michael. In 1991, a leaked original version of the song “Word to the Badd!” contained lyrics that took direct shots at Michael’s changing appearance and personality.

As Jermaine and Alejandra’s marriage progressed, their family grew. They had two sons: Jaafar Jeremiah Jackson, born in July 1996, and Jermajesty Jermaine Jackson, born in October 2000. This expansion of the family tree further entwined the lives of the children, who found themselves navigating complex roles as both half-siblings and cousins.

The marriage eventually dissolved, with Jermaine filing for divorce in 2004. The settlement was finalized in 2008, involving the payment of $100,000 in debt and $3,000 in child support, according to court documents reported by TMZ.

From Conflict to Cinematic Healing

For years, the family attempted to normalize their dynamics. In 2014, Alejandra and her five children filmed a reality series for Reelz titled Living With the Jacksons. The show aimed to document their lives after moving out of the family estate, but it was ultimately canceled and never aired.

The true catalyst for reconciliation, however, has been the production of the Michael biopic. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film requires a level of familial cooperation that has been elusive for decades. Jaafar Jackson’s commitment to the role—which he kept secret from his family for nearly a year—has develop into a focal point for unity.

Jaafar noted that the process was emotionally charged, particularly for his mother. “No one in my family knew for a full year. I kept it pretty quiet until I felt comfortable enough to share it,” he explained. “But when my mom saw it on-screen, it blew her away. It was hard for her to connect it to me, so it was very emotional for her.”

By embodying the essence of Michael Jackson, Jaafar is not only honoring his uncle’s legacy but is also providing a shared purpose for his father and uncles. The project has forced a convergence of the family’s disparate branches, turning a history of romantic rivalry into a collective effort to preserve the legacy of the King of Pop.

The film, featuring Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson and Nia Long as Katherine Jackson, is scheduled for release on April 24. As the premiere approaches, the family appears more aligned than they have been in thirty years, suggesting that the art of storytelling may have succeeded where traditional diplomacy failed.
