There is a high probability that the European Union will apply sanctions against Turkey, they can affect the banking sector, energy and shipping, the head of the International Committee of the Federation Council, Konstantin Kosachev, told RIA Novosti.
The European Parliament adopted a resolution on Thursday calling for sanctions against Turkey over its stance on Cyprus. For his part, Turkish Foreign Ministry Press Secretary Hami Aksoy said that Ankara considers the resolution to be biased and disconnected from reality.
“The issue of new sanctions against Ankara will be decided in mid-December at the summit of EU leaders, and the probability of their adoption is quite high,” Kosachev said.
According to him, most likely, the sanctions “will be aimed at the banking sector, energy and cargo transportation”.
“Therefore, the development of the conflict is quite predictable,” the senator concluded.
