The court arrested the rector of KFU Gafurov in the case of contract murder

The Basmanny Court of Moscow has arrested the rector of the Kazan Federal University (KFU) Ilshat Gafurov for two months on charges of contract murder, the press service of the court said.

The charge was brought under Part 2 of Art. 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (murder committed by a group of persons by prior conspiracy from mercenary motives or for hire), was clarified earlier in court. The investigation considers Gafurov an instigator to the murder.

“On December 22, 2021, the Basmanny Court satisfied the investigator’s petition to choose a preventive measure in the form of detention in relation to the person accused of committing crimes […] Gafurov Ilshat Rafkatovich until February 21, 2022. The petition of the defense to choose a preventive measure not related to detention, including house arrest, was denied in respect of Gafurov, ”the statement says.

Gafurov was detained this morning. The details of his criminal case are unknown.

In April 1998, Gafurov became the mayor of Yelabuga. From 1995 to 2005, Gafurov was a deputy of the State Council of Tatarstan, and in 2010 he was appointed rector of the Kazan Federal University (KFU). Gafurov graduated from the Faculty of Physics in 1983, and in 2005 he defended his doctoral dissertation.
