Dacia has just presented its new Duster, a vehicle with which they are going to directly attack the B-SUV segment, which represents 25% of the private market.

The competition is, logically, fierce, but the Renault Group brand has an overwhelming argument in its favor: the price. It is possible to access the Duster range for less than 20,000 euros (19,290, specifically) and get one fully equipped for 27,000.

This, together with initiatives such as the seven-year warranty – a retroactive measure that was introduced at the beginning of this year – or the change of image has made this brand the one that best maintains the residual value of its vehicles.

This, according to the brand’s general director, Francisco Hidalgo, allows them to offer “the best financing installments on the market.” For the Duster, the manufacturer offers monthly payments of 150 euros, providing a down payment of 2,500 euros.

All versions of the new Duster have the DGT Eco label, both the 100-horsepower LPG engine and the 48-volt mild-hybrid, which develops 130 HP; as well as a conventional 140 hybrid. The last two versions can be chosen with front- or four-wheel drive.

Of all the engines tested, our favorite is the light hybrid, as we noticed that the conventional one sometimes hesitated, depending on the speed and inclination, whether to apply the thermal engine or the electric one, which, without being frustrating, was a distraction.

On all-wheel drive models, Dacia has introduced a five-mode driving roulette that can lock the differentials to deliver power to all wheels. Additionally, there are snow, mud and off-road programs that affect the amount of torque each axle receives and the relevant electronic aids.

The angles of attack and departure are not negligible for an all-terrain vehicle, 31º and 36º, respectively, while the ventral angles are 24º. This allows it to tackle surprising off-road terrain – although it is unlikely that we will find a Duster on the most technical roads of Utah.

Most likely, it won’t be very far from any asphalt, even though Dacia has designed the vehicle to withstand the elements. That is why the group is going to use it for its emerging markets, such as Dacia in North Africa and the French-speaking colonies, and like Renault in South America.

Inside, it has curious details, such as the accessory holder that allows you to implement elements such as coasters or interior lights, all optional elements. In addition, customization elements are available, including one to ‘camperize’ the car.

Although the Duster has excellent performance for daily use, with robust lines that show a determined evolution towards a strong brand image, the biggest criticism that can be made of it is its consumption. Even though the brand approves 6 liters per 100 km, we did not see that on the meter.
