A study published in the journal Science estimates that the potential for eliminating carbon dioxide presented in the latest IPCC report is overestimated, at the risk of causing a land use conflict.

To respect their climate commitments, States are above all supposed to drastically reduce their dependence on fossil fuels. The IPCC recognizes it, however: respecting the Paris agreement (and limiting global warming to 2°C, or even 1.5°C), requires the use of other “tools” to get rid of difficult residual emissions. to be eliminated, such as those linked to aviation, maritime transport or the cement and steel industries.

Among these many levers, CDR – for “Carbon Dioxide Removal” – consists of capturing the carbon dioxide already emitted into the atmosphere. The process ranges from simply planting trees, which naturally absorb carbon to grow, to much more expensive and energy-intensive technologies to directly suck CO2 from the air.

Governments are increasingly relying on CDR. But what are its real capabilities? A team led by Alexandra Deprez, researcher at Iddri (Institut…
