TRENTO. “We watched, in disbelief, on Wednesday 16 October in the Regional Council at serious utterances from Vice President Gerosacouncilor for Equal Opportunities, on the bill ‘Women in the Regional Council'”. This was declared in a note by the Democratic women of Trentinowho this morning, during a press conference held at the headquarters of the Trentino Democratic Party, launched a petition to ask the vice president of the Province of Trento Francesca Gerosa to restore “delegations regarding equal opportunities“ and that these delegations “be assigned to another member of the Council”. Gerosa had frontally attacked the Province of Bolzano, saying she was “absolutely against” quotas for women in the regional council because “the citizens’ vote must be respected in choosing the composition” of the executive. The bill was presented by Brigitte Foppa of the Greens and also signed by the SVP, as well as by the minority councilors of Team K, Pd, Campobase and Casa Autonomia.
“The Councilor has demonstrated that he does not know or deliberately ignores the data and current legislation: gender balance in top institutional positions is, unfortunately, far away just as the presence of women at the top of institutions and decision-making bodies is still insufficient”, explain the Democratic Women.
“If this were really the case, that is, if it were true that women do not suffer discrimination, we ask ourselves what the specific purpose of the specific delegation that the Councilor has intentionally assumed is. A delegation, that of Equal Opportunities, which in its essence, cannot be misrepresented and cannot manipulable, it requires from those who hold it a commitment to putting policies in place for remove all sorts of discriminatory obstacles which prevents the participation of women in social, economic life, in the world of work and in political life and representation and consequently also in institutions”.
