Theatre of NOTE to Premiere Critically Lauded Play “The Dignity Circle” in Los Angeles

A new production explores the allure and danger of pyramid schemes, set to run February 14 through March 22.

Los Angeles audiences will soon have the opportunity to experience “The Dignity Circle,” a critically lauded play by Lauren Smerkanich, as presented by Theatre of NOTE. Directed by Clara Aranovich, with associate direction by Smerkanich, the production promises a timely and thought-provoking exploration of community, vulnerability, and the deceptive nature of empowerment.

The play features a talented cast including Alexis DeLaRosa, Sarah Lilly, Sierra Marcks, J.T. Melaragno, Zipporah Shunise, Jenny Soo, and Melanie Thompson. Performances are scheduled to begin on February 14th and will run every Friday, Saturday, and Monday at 8 p.m., with Sunday matinees at 2 p.m., continuing through March 22nd.

“The Dignity Circle” centers on Judith, a woman seeking connection who falls prey to a pyramid scheme disguised as a support network. Lured in by Angela, a charismatic realtor, Judith joins a “Dignity Circle” in Sacramento, a seemingly simple gift-giving system promising empowerment to women. The narrative unfolds to reveal the devastating consequences when the truth behind the scheme is exposed, questioning the nature of relationships built on deception.

Smerkanich shared her fascination with the subject matter, stating, “I find cons fascinating. These schemes play on our most basic human needs—the need for love, for safety and security, for community. I wanted to write a relationship between two women that was more complicated than a con and her mark. I wanted them both to gain from knowing one another, to give each other hope, and ultimately, to be the cause of each other’s downfall.”

Aranovich emphasized the play’s relevance in today’s economic climate, noting, “There is something tragically timely about ‘The Dignity Circle’—pyramid schemes have always flourished in moments of economic precarity. Theater is our clearest mirror, offering the relief that comes only from feeling seen and understood. I’m honored to share this story at a time when so many are searching for stability, direction, and connection, craving belonging as much as we crave the catharsis of dark humor.”

The production’s artistic vision is brought to life by a dedicated crew, including Jennifer Gonzalez (Lighting Design), Mariah Harrison (Costume and Mask Design), Julia Hibner (Stage Manager), Amanda Knehans (Set Design), Chloe Madriaga (Fight Choreographer), Melissa McNamara (Movement and Intimacy Director), and Stephanie Yackovetsky (Sound Design).

“The Dignity Circle” promises to be a compelling theatrical experience, offering a poignant reflection on the human desire for belonging and the dangers of exploitation.
