Alex Salmond’s minority Alba party presents an alternative roadmap to secession to that of the ruling Scottish Nationalist Party

The Scottish independence movement is not experiencing good times. Thus, while the Scottish Nationalist Party (SNP) has not yet assimilated the change in his leadership and the failure of losing the judicial battle to promote a second referendum on secession, a split of the formation, Alba, wants to take advantage and has presented an alternative roadmap to promote a new consultation on remaining in the United Kingdom.
Alba, a party led by former Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond, has announced that will seek to call a new plebiscitebut not about independence directly, but to ask the Scots if they consider that the regional Parliament should have the power to legislate on that matter and negotiate with the British Government an eventual separation.
The announcement has been made, Ash Regan, who this year was a candidate to be the leader of the SNP, after the resignation of Nicola Sturgeon, and who after losing to Humza Yousaf He ended up defecting to Alba. «The Supreme Court’s decision has closed the possibility of proposing an independence referendum. However, nothing prevents our Parliament proposes a referendum on its powerss,” he explained. The initiative should be approved by the Edinburgh Legislature, but for it to even be discussed it is necessary for 18 deputies to support it, numbers that the Alba party does not currently have and, therefore, will need the support of the majority SNP.
Tenth anniversary
If the idea materializes, the consultation would take place in 2024, the year in which the tenth anniversary of the first referendum on Scottish independence will be celebrated, which 55% of voters rejected.
The minority Alba’s proposal comes more than a month after the SNP will set its new roadmap to achieve secession, which passes for winning the majority of seats in the British Parliament reserved for Scotland.
